how you figure that out, BM?

Same way I can tell you are member 6606, your profile link ends with u=6606 which means yours is the 6606th profile created.

There are a few inconsistencies in the memberlist though, it seems 9 people joined on the 1st January 1970 despite the fact the site didn't exist until 2003.

The user id's cant be entirely accurate as Dan's user id is 221, user #1 didn't register until about 2 months after Dan created the site. I suspect the memberlist has either been pruned or corrupted at some point.

the numbers have nothing to do with people or posts.
the the numbers are database object id numbers.

If you want to get all serious about it, the user table will have an index that starts at 1 for the first user ect ect so they will relate to when you registered.
The inconsistancy will be from either users getting deleted or not completing their registration or some other such reason.
The date 1st January 1970 is the start of time as far as unix is concerned, if a user does not have a valid registration date, then the date is probably set to `0` which comes out at 1/1/1970

Well that was a load of boaring waffle, must have been raining all day.

the numbers have nothing to do with people or posts.
the the numbers are database object id numbers.

Technically wrong.

They are table indexes not database object id numbers.  A database object is a schema, table, query etc. - the numbers we are discussing do not refer to database objects - the refer to indiviual records within a databse object.
If a sequential index scheme is in place, which I believe is the default, then the first post will have an index number of 1. Likewise the first registered user will have an index on 1 in the user table.

Allowing for live testing we can expect that the actual first user will have an id > 1 (assuming the indexes were not reset) and Dan may have setup test accounts so the number we see maybe a few out from the real number of registered users but generally speaking the ID you see represents how long you have been registered.
The same applies to the table dealing with posting.

All you have to do to prove this is look at the message ids in the links on the home page.  They are ordered on time of posting and the message ids go down by one per post.

The message ID of this post will be 569995

I guess Dan has all the stats and could publish them if he chose but there is no reason why he should do so really.  I guess a few hundred regular posters, may be lots more who post infrequently.  In my experience you get a lot of ussers registering just to ask speciifc questions and then never posting again.

Interesting, if you look at the members list you can click on the column heading and they will be sorted according to that heading (click on the number of posts and the most poster (Tim) comes out on top)  There are 178 pages of members, and there are over 90 pages of members who haven't posted at all.  In fact the "number of posts" that is most frequent is 1, which means that the majority of people who register as members either don't post or just post the once.

But that doesn't mean they don't visit the forum, there is no obligation to post.  :) :) :)
