for me so far its been trying to dig over a very overgrown plot on my own.
but i know it will be worth it in the end

It looks well worth it though gt. I only put them in because its a good way of preparing the soil. Weeding when you put them in, getting some manure in and weeding again when you lift them. Year after its easy.

Hardest thing in the garden?  Not planting or sowing too early in case of a late frost.  I find this particularly difficult.

Post by: Lottie103 on April 05, 2009, 18:03:47
The digging is hard work but the worst bit for us at the mo is the length of time it takes to pick out all of the perennial weed roots, only to find out a few short weeks later just how much of the blasted stuff is still in there  :'(. I just am grateful we have lots of that rather than couchgrass tho - not looking forward to getting to that bit of the plot.

I wish my finished bit looked as professional as yours tho Gardentg. You'd think I'd been on the beer when sowing in `straight' lines  ::)

I have to agree the hardest part is the clearing and digging a new plot on your own. Having just got 6 rows of potatoes in and planning where to put everything else makes up for it though. Really looking forward to growing my own for the first time.  :) :)

For me, it's sitting down and taking time to appreciate it all!   I always seem to be rushing off to do the next job that needs doing ... just weed this bed, trim that one, sow seeds etc.  With only about 2 hours 3 times a week I am always on a mission ;D.

I would second all you lot who say the hardest thing is doing it on your own. Yesterday I walked round the site and on one plot there was a family of about 10 people and they were each digging their own little patch. I admit to a moment of jealousy there!

But having spent most of this morning picking out broken glass from a tiny raised bed that I'd made for my niece to play in, I think the nastiest jobs involve getting rid of man-made rubbish. There is something cathartic about pulling out a load of bindweed or slashing down brambles, but my heart sinks when the fork clinks against something man-made, as 9 times out of 10 there is loads more of it down there, and its sharp and in tiny little pieces. Give me weeds over broken glass any day!

Sometimes its hard to see the progress when other plots around you look so wonderful  :(

I used to mow and then rake a lawn for someone, that used to half kill me! Raking really hard to dig the moss out - murder on the abs. I've always hated sit-ups and leg-raises as well, as forms of exercise - I guess I have lazy abdominals!

Hardest job I have at the moment, besides picking out couch grass weeds, is working out where everything is going to go...

The hardest thing is working.

The best thing is dreaming. Imagining how it all will look, how the produce will taste, the admiration of others.

Then when everything is decimated by bugs and the wrong weather at the wrong time thinking. Next year ............

Digging out sedge that has seeded everywhere in a client's garden. Tougher than overgrown Phormium.

I second Robert: ground elder is the worst!

Last week I cleared a square meter that was overgrown with ground elder. I took out all the white roots, dug some deeper to find some more roots and the patch was completely clean.

NOT!!!

This weekend I saw tiny leaves emerging. And not a sign of the chard I had sown.

I used to take up the slabs from the path to get to the roots underneath them. This year the war is on: Round Up!
Even though I am reluctant to use it normally, I have sprayed it on the ground elder that came up between the slabs.

I love digging.saddo I know. The job I hate the most is washing out all of the seed trays and pots. Such a long and boring job. I suppose I could do them as they get used but thats too easy. All I know is that me back kills me when I ve done it.

I started using roundup on ground elder last year, very reluctantly. I hate doing it, but it's all through my hedges, and there's no other way of getting it out.

I agree about ground elder, it's a real menace. I didn't keep on top of it in my old garden, which is now my brother's, and he is a complete non-gardener. I have to go round there at some point and glyphosate it, but I know from experience it will take repeated sprays. I just hope it hasn't filled the whole garden by now!

Shirl - I am another saddo as I love digging and clearing the plot aswell - very theraputic as my mind can go on auto and dream whilst the body does the work.

The thing that's the hardest for me is not sowing too much of everything and as a consequence having to pick which of my seedlings will meet the great gardener in the sky. :-\

The hardest job for me is walking past the pub on the way to the lottie,  ;)  but the job I hate doing the most, I'll stand back here and wait for the responces, is sowing indoors,  repotting and watching most of the seedlings die, next year I'm sowing most of it direct.  >:(      ;D ;D ;D

Listening to the guy next door bragging about how much better his plot is than mine.

Fighting for the limited car parking spaces on a nice sunny Sunday afternoon (ie yesterday) when everyone and their dog want to be there.

clearing couch grass from clay soil. Its either too wet so you lose all the 'soil' or too hard.

I'd gladly trade my ground elder and creeping perennial thistle for couch grass, which is a doddle to get rid of in comparison. haven't started properly on the ground elder yet, covered it in plastic and ignored it so far, but the thistle is a nightmare - I started a thread on mystery roots when I took on my plot a couple of years ago, and this is what they turned out to be... like white unravelled knitting, yards and yards of the stuff, some over two spits deep, and it's SO brittle. my heart sinks every time I see another thistle poking its head up in the middle of what I thought was a nice clean bed.

Washing pots is top of my hate list.  Decided this year to use only disposable ones.  Newspaper shaped ones, bottom of milk cartons and loo rolls.  But I can't bring myself to throw away those pots stacked in the shed.

I find that the only hard job is saying goodnight and going home.

If you use the right tools the right way at the right time there is no hard job in the garden. If you don't enjoy gardening don't do it.

Speedwell seeds all over my plot. I don't bother about it much as it doesn't grow tall enough to compete with many veg, and a mulch soon smothers it.

it depends on what you mean by hardest. Physically hardest has to be barrowing manure, compost etc up to my plot!  most boring on the other hand has to be mowing.......... too dull for words! but then I like the cuttings for mulch, so the benefit in the end outweighs the effort  :D
