Title: Calling all Enfield, Barnet and surrounding area Allotmenteers
Post by: cornykev on November 14, 2009, 20:05:35
Hi my name is Cornykev and I'm an alcoh, sorry wrong group.
I'm starting this thread as a few of us were going to meet up for a drink and its easier to leave messages and have a general chat on here.
Even our Northern friends and brummies can join in.
I might even buy a drink if we organise our get together.
 ;D ;D ;D

I was in Enfield last night lambasting some chavsters for ruining the film I was watching.  Three times I told 'em to button it and then I lost my rag.  Wasn't you, was it?  ;)  Getting back on topic, I'm about 17 miles from Enfield so can I come too pretty please?  :-*

It was lovely to see you, I will have to try and get Kev to sort something out.  Perhaps a meal would be better and if people are driving they can't drink.  I don't drive anymore, walk, cycle or bus it.

Sammy your always more than welcome, including Georgie and Borlotti thats four of us, and when mum visits you she also would be more than welcome.  ;)
So its either a few drinks in a pub or there's some eaterys behind the pictures.
Sammy I'm afraid the pictures are getting a bit of a bad reputation on Friday and Saturday nights with the kids causing a bit of grief.

My diary is filling up fast so we'd better make a decision soon if it's going to be this side of Christmas.

I've never done a meet up like this before but for what's it's worth I think we should keep it simple.  We said a drink and I think that's probably best as none of us really know each other and a meal could be awkward if someone wants to make a hasty exit.   ;D

I suggest we pick a pub near to either Enfield Chase or Enfield Town station so that those who want to come (whether to drink alcohol or soft drinks) will be able to get there easily.  I reckon an 8pm start would be about right to cater for those who work/have to travel/have kids to put to bed etc.

And as a bit of an ice breaker perhaps we could all bring along a few seeds to swap? Just a thought.   :)

We had another compost delivery yesterday Borlotti, there's still some left outside my plot, so the vultures had it tipped up there end, we burnt a tree stump that was in the middle of our other tipping area, so it should be easy for the driver next time.   ;)

Hi, we've had two sections of fencing at opposite ends cut on our site and someone was seen taking metal poles off the plot, we think someone has a van close by and they are taking all the scrap metal off site, beware everyone scrap metal is at an all time high.   >:( >:( >:(

Visited another local Enfield site today, The Cabbage Patch, well we visited their shop to get a few ideas and buy some bulk stock. We met the community bods on bikes there and they were really nice we chatted them up about site visits and ten minutes after we were back on site they paid the site a visit, I did show the site sec up a bit when I was carrying the bags out and told him I had nicked them and hurry up and get his car round , the CB did laugh so at least they have a sense of humour.   ;D :P

You are doing well with the compost.  We got scaffold boards, but this delivery was not too good but made a good bonfire, so got rid of a load of my rubbish that wouldn't compost.  Scaffold boards not from the Council.  Don't think we are having new fences are some neighbours have said they like the old fence and the higher fence would spoil the view over the playing fields, and at the moment we don't get any vandalism.  Hope they cut they big fir/whatever tree done at the end of my allotment, can't wait.

Hi all, made it at last.
Great to hear that people are getting compost, lucky buggers. The only thing we get from the council is a wave as they pass by in thier car. Our secretary hasn't spoken to us in 5 years. Still seeing that he's an a hole, then that suits me fine. He's had more than 3 witten complains about him and the council won't do anything.
We have a fence, just, it's low enough for the yobs to climb over.
Anyway that's enough of a winge for now.

Who do you Deal with at the council Steph over complaints
Our fence is still not been started on
The fir trees are still 100 feet high
We have organised a BBQ at the site so that should get people together
Our shop is up and running and we have sold a fair bit so far
The best allotment competition poster has gone up and I might enter myself
Sillybum has been sowed direct but no sign yet
Next years prices 2012 are as follows £85.00 for a ten pole plot and £12.00 water charge
This years prices 2011 were as follows £64.00 for a ten pole plot and £9.50 water charge
I may have got this bit wrong but concessions are 25% off and not the usual 50%

Cornykev,
When I ring the council I don't speak to anyone in particular, just the allotment team.
Be great if we could organise a BBQ but our Sec. wouldn't have it.
We had a shop years ago but then the council said we couldn't have it anymore and our Sec. isn't interested.
Good luck with the fence & trees. Don't hold your breath. LOL.

I went to the lottie this afternoon and part of our new fence has been erected, the fencing that runs along the park up until the gate, which just happens to run adjacent to my plot, and they cut back quite a lot of trees and bushes so I'll be planting some silybum in the gaps, how far shall I plant them G.   ;D

The allotment next to us is having a new fence errected but the grass next to our plot has grass that is now 2 feet high. Good to see the council spending thousands £ on fencing. It's a pitty they can't find time to cut the grass.
Title: Re: Calling all Enfield, Barnet and surrounding area Allotmenteers
Post by: Borlotti on June 04, 2011, 11:01:55
Council cut the grass yesterday around the allotment. But in danger of repeating myself, we have a pro-active Secretary and he does get things done.  New fence up, compost, woodchip and manure delivered (free) and a lorry load of scaffolding boards.  Even had the tree surgeons there the other day, and I forgot the new water tanks.  I think there are grants available if applied for.  Ask Kev (he is on a committee).  Did think they could renew the toilets, as when you pull the chain get a shower (stand well back) but I was told that the money was only available for certain things (like fences).

Our fence is still not finished  :-\
I asked our site sec to chase up on the wood chip and hopefully that will be sorted next week
Our Allotment Review Officer was on site checking on the new fence and I asked about getting some of the over hanging trees and shrubbery cut back, but no joy there I think
We cut the grass back ourselves on site
Steph what site are you on as there about 4or5 off the A10
The only committee I'm on is for the shop, so have no power in getting things done on site
The meeting we had to start the shop involved our ARO so we asked him about new fences and padlocks, which both are sorted now
Our next targets are the giant fir trees and maybe the toilets
Our BBQ was a success yesterday and brought lottie holders together who don't normally get to see each other, a Sunny day and a Greek Bloke cooking the grub what more could you want and the kids going to the fair next door afterwards.

Does others on your site share you veiw and will they support you

They finally finished the fence at last, they had to put a walk in gate next to the drive in gate,  to make less noise when opening so not to annoy the neighbours, but the council in the way only a council can operate have put a different padlock on it so no one can use it anyway.    ???
We had compost delivered last week and we put it up the other end of the site just to keep the vultures happy.     :(
The hedges on the graveyard side have been cut from their side and they have trimmed the top, thats the first time in a few years, but still they won't come in and trim the hedges, shrubbery and trees inside.    :'(

How do u keep getting all the compost.  I don't care as my soil is so good , so put that in your pipe and smoke it.   ;D ;D ;D  Had a row about bonfires last night, the women in the garden, said f, f, f, and f again, and called the police and the fire brigade, but no-one came, and it wasn't me that did it, new people on the overgrown allotment and had a bonfire after 7 pm and must admit it did smoke, but new lady apologised, but the bonfire went on and then the Council come and took photos today, so we are in big trouble.  She is a very scary neighbour, next to the allotments, I have never, ever had a fire again, after she shouted at me. I went home in tears.  Next time her lovely children climb over the fence, on to my allotment I will not be too nice to them. It was a bit of a shame as the new people have been working so hard every day and love the site, but I suppose it was a bit silly to burn the overgrown stuff, but it was only once, and the lovely f lady, should not threaten people, her shouting and swearing could be heard all over Enfield.  I think they are lucky to have such a lovely house and enormous garden, and are Council tenants, I believe.  Now we have signs up, no bonfires until after September, then I think I will burn all my rubbish.  Think the Council should provide more facilities for rubbish if one takes on an overgrown site, and not everyone has a car to take the rubbish home.

Do you not get trailers for rubbish Borlotti, we get two a year.
We do get neighbours complaining about fires but some people just don't use their common, light them well away from the houses and make sure there's no wind or it's blowing the other way.
But I still don't get all the burning, compost 95% and bag the rest and it breaks down in the bags or throw away the diseased stuff and if you have to burn do it on Guy Fawkes week, no one will moan with all the smoke in the atmosphere.
I think we get compost every 4 to 6 weeks, I've asked about wood chippings and I'm waiting to see if any turns up.
Still no pruning or strimming or grass cutting going on inside the lottie, I asked our council bloke and he said they just won't do it, I explained that your site gets looked after and he said its just dangerous trees that have been cut down.
If you are getting abuse from neighbours you should all sign a letter and keep the council informed with it.
 ;D ;D ;D

We haven't had compost lately, expect it all went to your site.  :( :( :(   We do have woodchip which doesn't seem to have been taken very quickly and also a pile of the manure. We have the rubbish trailer twice a year, but it gets very full very quickly, think we need it more often or bigger. I do compost a lot, but need to cut the old blackcurrant and redcurrant bushes back as they are not very productive, and also prune the apple tree, later on.  I will wait until after September and then when Keith lights a big bonfire away from the houses, and it gets really hot, can burn my stuff and it won't smoke.  Trouble is it often gets wet in October, and it is very wet now.  The overgrown sites that got a letter have cut down 5ft high stuff and it really needed to be burnt, it was better when the Council rotavated the sites before they were taken on, but they don't do that anymore.  We have some good weeds growing on our site and it takes a long time for the Council to send letters and give the site to new people, and in the meantime the weeds grow and grow. Perhaps they cut the grass around our site because we back onto the playing fields and they do both together.  They don't do the paths on the allotments just the side bits and the communal paths.

I forgot to mention the Best allotment competition last month, it seems you had a couple of winners on your plot Borlotti, I entered just to see how they marked it, I don't grow a lot of the pointed items on the list, garlic, marrows, cougettes, peppers, squash, salads and tommies. Strawberrys and raspberrys had finished, so low or no points for them, did anyone else enter.   ;D

What is going on with this compost.  Its just not fair, we were told we couldn't have any.   :BangHead:  Actually haven't been to the allotment for 2 weeks, had a chest infection (very nasty).  Might have a walk up today and see if anything is happening re the redevelopment of George Spicer School.  Some people will lose their allotments, but not me.  I wish the Council would cut our big fir trees down.  Kev must have friends in high places.

I hate you Kev, we have only had one compost delivery and nothing is left for poor old me.  Sob, sob.  We also got broken into, but they took nothing, but tried to get the chicken which has now been taken home.  My new friend at the allotments gave me some articokes, Jersulam ones,  to plant.  I am so lucky with my friends, even though 3 people have unfriended me on facebook, but I don't care.

I was in Enfield last night lambasting some chavsters for ruining the film I was watching.  Three times I told 'em to button it and then I lost my rag.  Wasn't you, was it?  ;)  Getting back on topic, I'm about 17 miles from Enfield so can I come too pretty please?  :-*

Was that at the Cineworld? Now that we have retired we go at lunchtime and it is nice and quiet 'cos all the kids are at school. :icon_cheers:

We are in Chingford and have an allotment there. But it doesn't sound as good as yours cornykev. Ours is a right tip with no mod cons apart from the water tanks.

We go to the Clockhouse too.

Hi Mrs T  and welcome, our toilets are basic but they have put up new fencing and gates and cut back trees and shrubbery, the compost is a bonus but don't mention it to Borlotti as she gets a bit grumpy when I mention it.    :blob7:        :coffee2:

Even basic toilets would be welcome. Luckily we live very near our allotments.
We can't  get the free compost delivered to our site as lorries can't get to the site. I know I tried to organise it. We have to go to the local recycling dept with shovels and bags and carry it on to site.

Hubby does it with much moaning and groaning and telling me about it in detail. :toothy10:

We are pleased with the way our lotty is coming on. We have only had it 3 years and had to carve a plot out of the wilderness. Still loads to do to get it really good but we are on our way. :happy7:

There is one on King's Road, which is very well ordered, one off the Chingford Mount Road which is very nice indeed, with a community hall and loos and proper security fencing and then there is ours at Drysdale. Really great people but several overgrown and unused plots. Although there is some action being taked to clear the worst plots and relet them by the new allotment officer.

Don't think there are any by the Rugby club. Ours is rather well hidden, in the middle of a square of houses.
not that we have been able to do much recently with the waterlogging and this miserable wet weather.

I can see my seedlings growing and thinking that I will have another log jam like last year. :BangHead:

Still we all battle on.

IT'S NOT FAIR, GREAT BIG SULK.  But we do get horse manure, (straw mainly), leaves, wood chip and very occasionally COMPOST.  Hopefully now the Council has put us back on the list should get it more regularly, but one has to be quick to get any.  Our toilets were replaced last year (so there), but we are going to lose some allotments for the new school and a lovely car park (but it wont affect me).  Love you really Kev, although you do get on my wick.  :BangHead: :BangHead:
