Unusual Fern
« on: June 09, 2005, 09:22:35 »
Is this unusual in frond formation? As all of my ferns have flat fronds, quite pretty though don’t you think? ;D

Hi Roy,
Looks like Polystichum setiferum. Its a cultivar of the Shield fern, very nice fern, I've got the same one. I have always liked ferns, and I'm often busy potting them up from where they have found a home, to be transfered to a more suitable spot.

Thata beautiful Roy.  Such a gorgeous shape.  Im putting together a woodland area in my garden and this is just the sort of thing that I am looking for.  How big does it get???  So far all that I have planted are native ferns 'relocated' from the woods at the back of the house, hostas, bluebells, snowdrops and daffs for the spring.
Take time to stop and smell the flowers.

I've got a similar one Mimi, polystichum setiferum plumosum multiobum  (looks exactly the same though)  and supposedly spreads 4ft x 3ft.
Is it wrong to fancy Lucius Malfoy?

The book says 50cm (20") high x 60cm (24") spread, mine is in a small terracotta pot and is approx. 40cm (16") high x 50cm (20") spread ;) Too late for a piccy I spose? your woodland area sounds lovely Mimi :)
