"greenhouse" help
« on: May 22, 2005, 12:00:33 »
I use the term greenhouse in the loosest sense of the word, but I hope you can help me anyway.

I am new to this gardening, and don't really have much of a garden - its more of a children's play area ::)

However, I have recently acquired one of these- please note, this is a picture, of one like mine, they are NOT my plants!!!

My question is, what can I grow in it at this time of year.  I have a little grow bag with some lettuce that I was going to put on the bottom shelf.

I also fancy doing a variety of herbs, and some flowers for my garden pots - although not sure if I'm too late for the flowers ???  Could I do tomatoes ???

Sorry I'm so ignorant to all this gardening, but I do want to learn, even tho with what I have there isn't much scope :'(  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

I have one which I use for seed trays and cuttings, and very little else.

Stop whingin' Rhi,  supermazzz to the rescue!   ;D

They are usually just used for cuttings and seeds but Im sure you could stand some geraniums in it. Or any plants that will grow in small pots like a geranium does. Maybe small roses too.

What sort of plants do you like?

No harm in trying lettuce.

You wont need the cover tho'  thats only really for protection against the frost when you are starting stuff off.

Go to the garden center Rhi and just buy whatever you like the look of. It will all be ok to do now. Dont get anything that grows too tall. If in doubt ask while you are there.

Check on labels  for the size of your herbs before buying.

Happy gardening Rhi.  ;D

*ahem* love me forever ?  Lends a tenner?  :P  :-*  ;D

By the way, i think herbs are a great idea for your green house, try chives, parsley and  coriander :)

That's a shame, Waggi. I've had one like that for years and a pile of bricks in the bottom always seemed to do the trick. We get some pretty wild winds here in Yorkshire, and we live on top of a hill, too.
The last set of gales blew our back fence down, but didn't touch my little greenhouse.
Mind you, it's against the back wall of the house and is fairly sheltered, so perhaps I've just been lucky.

:o  Yes I agree with Waggi.  Be careful.  I had to weigh mine down with 2x 3'concrete kerb stones.

I kept cacti in mine for years until I got a large green house.

Now I use mine for tomatoes before they are put outside, and peppers after the tomatoes have been moved.

When you've sorted out the problem with weighing it down,  then they are brilliant :D :D :D

Have fun with it ;D

I think you will find there is plenty of time to sow herbs, I have a multi pack of them that I haven't had time to sow, but feel sure the months ahead will be fine. ;D

I've got one of these things (but with only 3 shelves) and have a chili plant and a couple of tomatoes in it. Also have a seed tray with various veg seeds germinating.

I've got me one of those too. I have been using it since february to start seeds off, protect from frost and keep stuff a bit warmer - toms, pumpkins etc.

I've had a blowing-over catastrophe as well, and now have a big bag of compost in the bottom, and a full 5l bottle of water to weigh it down.

I find mine is hotter at the top, especially when it's full, and put stuff there that I want to germinate and keep warmer, and have cooler stuff like leeks and lettuce further down. Have loads of toms in there at present waiting to go out, basil, chives, sweetcorn seedlings, asparagus from seed, some brassicas germinating etc.

Will eventually stick a growbag in the bottom and plant some peppers and a thai chilli in there (if the yellow peppers ever bother to germinate  >:()
Lottie-less until I can afford a house with it's own garden.

Hi RhiBi

Don't worry about asking questions.  That's what this site is all about. ;D ;D  As a newbie myself, I have asked some really daft questions ::), but always got sensible answers back.

It's a brilliant site, and you can normally find the answers you want :D
