Topic: earthing spuds

As my concrete soil is so hard could not get enough soft soil to earth up the spuds (think I planted the rows too close together).  After reading another thread about using straw to earth them up or grass cuttings I have used the old dried strimmings from the lottie.  Does this seem ok?  I waited until the cuttings had dried out as full of top growth of weeds.

I think it will work better than nothing because of the 3 reasons you earth up- greening / covering stems to prevent blight / giving the plant more soil on top for more spuds you have 2 of them covered.

I'm with you on the planting too close - doing a balancing act of pyramids at the moment!

i dont know what to do with mine....i've run out of soil!i planted mine not this last bank hol but the one before..will they still need more earthing up?when do we stop earthing?

I wasn't going to earth mine up anymore, the mounds are about 8" high.  Hoped that would be enough.

I planted mine at the same time as you Kitty and that is it for me on earthing up front.  I only did them once last year too (used mushroom compost that time) and the spuds were fine - not a single green one.  Probably could have had more if I earthed up more but happy with what I got.

;D This is where the tiller comes in handy, fluffing the soil for earthing up but the lanes are getting very narrow now :o ;D
