Sheep Tea/Fertiliser - how do I make it ?
« on: May 19, 2005, 17:36:03 »
I have sheep :D and they produce manureĀ  ;D!!

Someone suggested I can make my own liquid plant fertiliser - sheep tea - from it ... but I don't know how much manure to how much water for what length of time ... anyone able to advise.

Also there is the question of what dilution to use - to ensure not damaging the plants.

Thanks, Gill

joy larcomb suggests a bag of well rotted  manure(she didnt specify which i think)soot and grass cuttings which, from the illustration looked like about a bucket full...)dangled in a barrel of water for about ten days then dilute to the colour of weak tea-she calls it 'blackjack'......hope this helps!
other than that i would layer it into my compost heaps...

As suggested, just dump it into a bucket (or a barrel) of water and leave it to brew.

I don't think you'll get the sheep in the pot -anyway you'll have the RSPA round :)

The usual advice is to put the manure in a cloth bag, suspend it in a water but for a few days.

To use dilute the liquid (if necessary) to the colour of weak tea

I'm with Kitty here

put it on the compost heap ;D

Manure tea is a great foliar feed,  but if you get the concentration wrong it can either scorch the leaves or do nothing.  It's also very short-term whereas compost adds humus to the soil and provides long-term,  slow-release fertilizer.
