Plot 2
« on: May 06, 2005, 19:15:39 »
I have been offered a second plot, or rather a half plot, 16 paces long and about 10 foot deep one end and 20 foot deep the other end.

The current tenant is giving it up as he has bone and bowel cancer. :-(

He is leaving it very very spic and span, edges all cut, hardly a weed in sight and I rekon I could dig it over in less than 4 hours.

It includes a small shed and is fairly close the a water tap and does not have club root! There are two crowns of rhubbarb planted last year but no other fruit. :-)

Looks like I need to get some more stuff sown!!!

Well done Jerry, but sad the way it has to have been given up  :(
Get those new plants going, and you had better keep an eye out in the Friday Ad for a new Freezer! :)

Sad the way you have got the lottie. I would be growing some lovely flowers in one corner to give to him and his family as a thank you!

Yes, I am going to be growing Dahlias and some other flowers on the plot. They will get the benefit of them as well as some of the veg.  He is refusing payment for the shed so I am going to make a donation to a local Hospice where is going to be staying.

Well today I met the old chap and his wife, very very nice people. They have had the allotment for 48 years non stop.

I spent about 45 minutes chatting with them as they explained how the shed lock works and where they grew what last year.

They wanted the contents of their compost bin so I have bagged that up for them and taken it to their house. I have also said they are more than welcome to come around anytime to check up on me!

My wife arrived just before they left and they were pleased as punch to meet my kids, especially when my oldest said he would grow some flowers and veggies for them and he promised to take them around through the year.

As they handed over the keys to the shed there was a tear in more than one eye I can tell you! They would not accept any payment for the shed but a check is already on the way to the hospice he will be using in the future, a long time away I hope!

As to the plot, what can I say. It digs beautifully. I blitzed through about a 5th of it in an hour or so and transplanted some lettuce into it as the first crop. I feel very very lucky!

Oh flippin eck Jerry.  I'm filling up rapidly. I've just been on the WW2 thread and that was bad enough and now this.  48 years on the same plot and having to give up must have been a real blow, and being so ill too.  How very sad.  In a way though it isn't as you'll be carrying on his good work and will get as much enjoyment from it as he and his family did.  It would be genuinely sad if the plot was left untended and it became a mess.

I feel better now.  Have been maudlin all day as found rabbit dying on plot today from mixamatosis.  Poor thing was there all day and I couldn't kill it.  I gave it some of my lettuce to eat.  It's eyes were just red balls and weeping horribly.  My husband didn't get to the plot til about 6.30 and only then was it put out of it's misery.  My husband now is very upset too  :(

Chap next to me has the same medical problem and gave his plot up last year. The people who have taken it on have no idea, it looks more like a tip month by month. At least the plot Jerry is on about is going to someone who'll respect it. How about a bench at one end so the old fella can apreciate a bit of sunshine in familiar surroundings occasionally?

Great to get a new plot, just sad the circumstances it arrived.  My plot number 2 was old Bernies plot, and he gave up half when he was daignosed as having a brain tumour.  He always planned to keep the other half going as that had all of his fruit bushes growing on it, but he never had the strength to visit, and he now has an immaculate fruit garden next door to my dads  :'(.  I have kept all of the fruit bushes that were alive when I finally took over the other half, giving 1 to a lottie neighbour.

Even tho it is now my plot, I always refer to it as Bernies plot.  :-\

Excellent idea, I have a bench going spare at home that would be perfect, it has been lurking in a shed for a couple of years now. All varnished and ready to go.

Thanks Ken.

I met the guy who used to have my allotment.  He said he gave it up as he couldn't get any manure delivered.  Hmmm           I think he used it as his own personal rubbish heap and gave it up when it got full  ;D

Just hope I can keep up to date!

Wish you well with your second plot Jerry.  I now have 7 plots which I dig all by spade or fork, they were all plots which were well overgrown which no one else would take on but I just got stuck in,(every bit of spare time I had and got them cleared) I am now reaping the rewards of my labour, but I must admit I am absolutely nuts about gardening and would be lost without it.

Ops, Typo.

Should read Finance. I work for a very large well know Financial Services company as the Financial Controller for the IT division.
