Topic: shed-greenhouse hybrid?

Is there such a thing? what are they called and how much do they cost?

I need a shed and I also need a greenhouse, but I only have room for one building (we currently have an 8ft x 4ft shed). I'd prefer not to get a small shed and a small greenhouse, due to the cost.

Also would it be ok in the South-West corner of the garden? With fencing to the south and west. (not sure how much sun it gets without spending a day sat on the shed roof!)

In my first garden we had an 8 x 6 shed with a long glass window on one side and a shelf next to the window and I managed to grow quite a lot there, so I would imagine the shed with more glass would be even more useful. It would stay a bit warmer than a greenhouse in the winter and not get so hot at this time of year.

My Mum had a summer house tyoe of building and used the front to grow her seeds and the back as a shed.  She overwintered the most beautiful fushias in it.

Tulippa - I thought about using the window, but it faces east and doesn't get any direct light. ever.

After looking at the price of greenhouses, etc (thanks for the links Eileen!) I'm thinking of scrapping my plan, for this year at least!

Maybe next year. I'll see how this summer goes!

Wivvles - that's the sort of thing!

Trouble is - would greenhouse veg (toms, peppers, etc) cope without direct sunlight through the window? I notice it doesn't have a clear roof.

If only I could cut the shed in half and attach half a greenhouse to it. Neither Mr Aqui nor I are particularly handy. Can I borrow someone's handyman?!

Aqui, sounds like you need a shed with a lean-to greenhouse!  :)
Would a little lean-to fit on to your existing shed?

Moggle - I saw those on my travels round the internet earlier. The sizes I saw would be too big for the garden. May look for smaller ones. Also worried about the height. Can't remember how tall the shed is at the front, but the lean to greenhouse seem taller.

Although the shed roof does slope away from the front. Must go measuring.

Watta - looks about the right idea, but actually too small. I'd outgrow that in a heartbeat!

I've been looking at leantos. They are rather on the pricey side (for me anyway!) And I still need to do some measuring in the garden to see if it'll fit...

More questions - how many tomato plants could I fit into a lean to measuring 6ft x 4ft (and still get in there!)

And the aspect is North East facing - would that be suitable? (I need to work out how many hours of direct light the area gets, assuming we have a sunny day this weekend!)

MT   they look flimsy but aren't.  I put one up, a cold frame that is and we live in a wind tunnel and it's been fine.  Nothing holding it down either.  I thought it would be useless and blow away.  The dog hit it at full tilt as well and I felt sure the polycarb would break but he just bounced off it.

The polycarbonate is virtually unbreakable apparently in normal use

Aqui , they have lean-to's on the norfolk site - very good price - covered in polycarb as opp to glass, but worth a look i think.

Plan for a lean-to greenhouse has been abandoned. I spent the whole of Saturday monitoring the light level next to the shed (whilst pottering about doing other stuff, of course!) The area gets between three and four hours of direct sun each day.

oh well!
