Topic: Kohl Rabi

Does Kohl Rabi have any pests that I should watch out for. I have a fleece tunnel cloche that I'm growing my carrots, celery and celeriac under to keep carrot fly away, do I need to include the kohl rabi in this tunnel or are they fairly pest resistant.

Slugs had a little nibble at mine last year, but they were grown completely uncovered and were fabulous!  First time I had ever grown them, or seen them come to that, and am growing double the amount this year!

i believe the various pests rather go for one of your other brassicas, than this one

i love kohlrabi - a big shame it is not commonly found in the shops around here

Tis great isn't it svea.  They look like little aliens!  Catch them why they are small - tennis ball size - and sweet and tender!  And don't forget, the young leaves can be used also as spring greens!

two favourite ways of eating them (does that work?):

1. raw, slice into 1/4 inch/5mm slices and nibble like a rabbit ;)
2. lightly cooked, cut into 1/2 inch/1cm cubes, add the shredded leaves for the last three minutes or so

I think KohlRabi is a brassica,  so you should be rotating it with your cabbage and kale,  not with the carrots.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong??

No doubt some `celeb` chef will discover it one day-then the  price(when it is for sale)will soar-ha ha then we can all make a bob or two selling any surplus ;D

Thanks Clayhithe, have planned to plant them among my brassicas which were planted out today under netting.

I wondered about these.  Is it too late to do a few ?  Are the anything like celeriac - yumm - or a cross between other roots ?

round our way (coventry - midlands) the pigeons eat almost anything green, kohl rabi is one of the victims, so net or fleece is always necessary here once the tops have developed.

Only like celeriac in that it is a bublous veggies, but I do believe Kohl Rabi is not a swollen root but a swollen stem.  It has a sweet texture, not unlike that of a brocolli or cauli stem.  If pulled young they are sweet, juicy and crunch and make great coleslaws, chips, mash...well, they can be used in the same way spuds and turnips are used, so the world is your kohl rabi!  ;D  Plenty of time yet.  In fact, keep sowing a few so you have young tender 'roots' to pull all the year long.
