Victorian cucumber method

I've just watched a borrowed copy of the Victorian Kitchen Garden series. One of the most interesting techniques was for indoor cukes and melons. They grew them on raised mesh covered with a layer of upside down turf. Apparently the lack of depth and free drainage suits them. Has anyone tried this method? I'm thinking of experimenting with a couple of plants for comparison. I'm not so sure about their method for scaring birds though. Kittens tied to running lines might be frowned upon here lol.

Nothing to say apart from I have been to where that series was filmed and met `Harry`-what an inspiration that man is(was?)-kind,helpful and so so modest.
If I ever achieve one tenth of what he did I will die a happy gardener

I'm guessing that watering needs to be done roughly once an hour ???
