Sharp frosts for next week..
« on: January 06, 2016, 11:39:27 »
Looks like some proper cold weather heading our way for this time next week. Could be trouble for my autumn planted broad beans and other stuff that is still growing or come into growth far too early.  But then good for killing off aphids and slugs so 6 of one etc..

I knew tracking down some more slug pellets would do the job!

Hurray!!  :blob7: Those slugs have been sauntering around in shorts and sunglasses for way too long.

My other stuff will just have to cope, am very glad frosts are coming, even if it means the heating has to go on again...

Didn't get my autumn broad beans in last year because of pouring rain and soggy ground, so have started them growing in modules for the first time ever. So it looks as if, just raising their heads at the moment, they will stay indoors for the frosts and I will put them out when it warms up again. I could even pretend I did it on purpose, expecting a harsh January.....

-12C here this morning and Friday's snow is now all crunchy.

Dream on about frosts killing slugs and sails.  They just burrow deeper and come out again when it's warmer.   Constant vigilance with small weekly dozes of wildlife friendly slug pellets works for me  - little and often from Feb 14th, cos it's easy to remember, gets them as they emerge or hatch and before they breed and feed.

It is not what I call cold really. The weather forecast said it was 7 but would  feel like minus 1. I thought it was a lot warmer. Got out and washed the cars this morning never warmed the water and it was alright. Thought I had better cut the hedge as well  before the birds start nesting, even worked up a sweat. On the subject of birds, the food has gone mouldy on the feeders as they must have found enough naturally as it has been so warm without having to visiting the bird table.

Getting warmer here.  -8C this morning and set to be above freezing by Saturday.    Not getting excited thought as February is often our worst month so just hoping to get trellis and fences fixed and build a frame for insect netting over the cabbage patch.

Dream on.   They'll survive.

Of course most will otherwise there wouldn't be any but it does help keep them in check - the mild winters (in the uK) over the last few years seems to have resulted in higner numbers of the d**n things..
