Sweet Corn Progress
« on: June 21, 2015, 10:21:05 »
They seem to be growing very quickly. They where sown direct and the variety is from Asia originally so I don't have a name.

Wow they look healthy Clumsy  :happy7:
Looks like direct sowing has worked well, I might try that next year. I sowed some in pots and I was a bit slow getting them planted out when we had that stormy week. They are taking a little while to get going, these are called Double Red.

I love the colour of you sweet corn. I've never heard of double red until now that is. We find it's better to direct sow it's a lot easier.

I did a trial of sowing directly last year, with half sown in rootrainers and half directly they were pretty much the same at the end of the season, so this year I sowed directly and germination has been very poor.  :BangHead:

Wow Clumsey they look brilliant, where are you?

I have sown direct in the past and the results were very patchy.  It used a lot of seed because I needed three per station to be sure of one hit and then there were a few threes.

I put my in kitchen roll and at the first sign of a root, they to into 12 module trays, and the when they are going well but not too big, out they go under bottles.  People on our site who put theirs out early they just went yellow and died.

I got some Glass Gem in the seed swap and they have germinated very well, only one failed, so they are a nice little square now, and the leaves are just coming out of the tops of the litre bottles.
They are all mulched up with manure, so hoping soon they will get a move on.

One person on our site has got tassles forming on their, but the plants are only about 6 inches high, so not sure what that is about.

Some of the plants have a lovely red colour now.

Do you sow them individually or a few together? I've got mine at about a foot apart each way, yours look like they might be a little closer, or perhaps it's looks that way because your plants are bigger than mine?

I'm glad they germinated well, be prepared they are really quite late to crop. Plants for me got very tall with lots of tillers. Hope they do well for you, they really are pretty  :happy7:

Sometimes if they have been in pots or modules a bit too long before being planted out, they start to tassel despite being quite short. It's as if they know they have been sown for a while and if the growing had been good they would be the right height to start tassels. Some of the modern varieties are really quite short and although they seem to start tassling early, by the time the silks appear they have put on lots of growth. Painted Mountain is another short variety and can start a tassel spike when the are really short, at foot or so, though that is double the height.

jayb we place one seed every 2 inches they are very close. I was supposed to thin out the weakest but
they look all good so I left them plus they are open pollinated plants . I find that own saved seeds have better germination.

Digeroo the allotment is in derby.
