Committee infighting
« on: March 17, 2014, 16:41:36 »
I am curious to know whether larger committees work better than smaller committees on self-managed allotments.

Does anybody have any horror stories of large committees (5+) whereby factional infighting has occurred, leading to paralysis of management?

Oh yes!  Cant go to much into details but our old lettings secretary went a bit off the tracks and sent out non cultivation warning letters to half of the committee.  Could have been dealt with better by a chat but relations had broken down..
Moved to Portugal - ain't going back!

Without giving details - we had 4-5 committee members leave inside of a year

Whether, you have 3 people or 10, it makes no difference. People will have a difference of opinion but when those differences carry over from the committee to personalities that is when the job goes pear shaped. A good constitution is important.

A good constitution is only workable if people actually take notice.

The worst offender is currently on the committee.

When you have the urge to staple the rules to his head you know you've had enough.

Simple answer is no. It's not the number of Committee members that is key but the personalities, intentions and attitudes. If you can get everyone to commit to key goals with consultation but making the overall decisions you have cracked it. Sounds simple but much more difficult to achieve as you will never please everyone whatever you do!
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Key goals should be a peaceful, safe, pleasant site?

Any goals after that eg: events, shows,  are just icing. The things that you don't have to do to have an allotment.
