New gardening mag
« on: March 09, 2005, 18:36:01 »
Has anyone seen the new veg magazine that has just been launched?

It looks like a glossy lifestyle job, with plenty of info about veg, smallholder issues etc.

I can't find any info, but know that it is out there

I've got one and it had two packets of free seeds on the front.  Broccoli Romanescu and some round carrots.  I think that the one you mean.  "Grow your own" it's called.  No price on it strangely enough (more money than sense me)  Regular articles are going to be aobut veg news, weeds, letters, six of the best veg reviews (spuds this ish), giveaways, problems answered by experts, growing your own, then features and then a practical section, etg food growing and what to do this month, smallholder stuff, sowing guide, patio gardener, seasonal veg cooking.  Features are italian tomatoes, asparagus, grow yourself fitter, companion planting, keeping chickens (getting started), info re tomatilloes, baby veg, Victorian kitchen garden, TV chef cooking venison and cockles, herb growing, tackling an overgrown lotty, polytunnel gardening.  Plus lots of adverts for poultry sheds and goat shelters etc.  That's about it  ;D
I came, I saw, I composted

On the back, noticed FREE Hessayon Pocket Vegetable Expert Book Worth £3.99 - ooo...
Martha Hill Gardeners cream costing 60p sae, might be interesting...
83p postage for 5 free anya seed spuds (via T&M)
The free carrot seed is Paris Market - ideal for container growing.

Not got further than the front cover yet - me cuppa is still rather hot, but the cover does look very glossy.

Bought it from WHS - Mimi, they should still have it in Caernarfon if you are interested!

Grow your own!

That's the one,  ;D  I'm a sucker for a glossy

I've got the phone number now, so I will have to think about a subscription

(Katie Thear is doing the chicken article, -  I like Katie, she knows her stuff)!

Multi - you're never alone if you've got chooks

Entered the GYO competition for the chooks! Haven't exactly got a lot of space, and as long as I can reach the washing line! Mind you, almost earmarked the green bit under the washing line for spuds/veg patch!

I regularly buy Kitchen Garden but spotted Grow Your Own in my local newsagents so bought it as a comparison mag.   To be honest I found KG much more useful and relevant to my self as a lottie holder.

However, just to stir things up more, one of my work colleagues gave me a copy of  BBC easy gardening which she subscribes to & I found it very readable.   I grow a lot of flowers in my back yard so found the BBC mag useful for that but prefer KG  for the plot.

I feel KG is the better of the gardening mags as it has a lot more useful info in it & is less of a "designer" mag.

A quick comparison shows that KG has a 6 page guide to starting your first allotment. It is informative.  Grow your own has a two page article on the same subject. It consists of a 3/4 page photo of an allotment, a 3/4 page photo of some tools and tells you both advanced bits of knowledge - plan your plot , then dig it over. KG is still the best monthly by my reckoning.

totally agree with the article on 'starting your overgrown allotment'-was very disappointing-i turned the page expecting more-and that was it!
bought 'grow your own' out of interest, but will stick to KG as it's got bags more substance.

GYO, looking at it now, is more of a glossy mag to entice people into growing. It has nearly 100 pages, whereas KG  is 76, and Organic Gardening only 52. GYO has a lot of recipes. They have tried to put things in to please everyone but don't look like they have gone into any depth. They have gone overboard on the pictures - the size, and they have a lot of wasted space (a whole column for the article title and synopsis). People I have heard of contributing to the issue - Hugh Fearnley-W., Toby Buckland, Jekka McVicar and Mick Lavelle.
Prices of current issues - £3.20? GYO, £3.10 KG, and £2.80 OG.
I haven't renewed the subscription to KG - there was talk on here that the stuff is repeated yearly (suppose not much changes in things to do for March from year to year), but have bought from charity shops and ebay back issues. I have OG subscription and their back issues. Handy as now I can read up about chooks (other half said I can have some in the garden)

Oops, perhaps I should stay with KGM then ???

At this rate I think I'll spend more time thinking about gardening than actually doing it.

Tomorrow I intend to sort my seeds (after I go to Swaffam Poultry market).

Multi - I started with a couple in the garden, and look what happened to me ;)
