Nice possibles Markfield R  :toothy10:

I did email HSL about Bijskij-zeltyi last year as it may not be the correct name for this tomato;

Unfortunately they did not reply.

I'm going to be growing some Glass Gem corn this year and thought of adding some, but I'm not sure how useful a crop it is? It does look beautiful though  :drunken_smilie:

How exquisite looking - just like it had been put together from multicoloured glass beads.  Goodness!  That is beautiful corn, Jayb  :angel11:

Exciting yes :blob7:
Useful....we will have to see, maybe if it's ground?   :happy7:

I tried a little in the popty ping earlier today but no pop to it!
Hmmm, perhaps best as ornamental, I just love the colours, particularly the pinks, light blue and greens, seeds are quite small though.

Thanks Galina, great links.

I should have some interesting peas, and hopefully a couple of lettuces. I haven't saved seed from these before, but it's supposed to be easy as long as they have time to mature. I'll see what else gets planted.

Sounds good Robert  :toothy10:

I've had problems with lettuce the last couple of years as it's been so wet here. Galina's pretty hot on lettuce I think a few others too hopefully they will chime in.

Green Zebra, bred by Tom Wagner, is 40 years old this year. I was lucky enough to get some 'breeder's seed' directly from Tom last season which I'm going to be growing. I'm not sure if or how different regular Green Zebra may have become away from it's source over the 40 years? But I like Green Zebra, it's a good tomato and I think these will be a nice one to share with others.

Considerably different - we talked about this on another group in 2001, and Tom Wagner said then that at that time the Green Zebra variations were already tremendous.  And that he could see distinct 'genetic drift' in only 5 generations in his own location.  Considering he made this statement about tomatoes in his own location, the genetic drift of all the Green Zebras in all the different places where this enigmatic tomato has been grown, is substantial.  I got seeds from 3 different sources (one was a freebie in an Australian gardening magazine) and the other two from the USA.  One of the US seeds has much higher yield and the Australian one has better flavour.  To look at they are all undoubtedly Green Zebra, but with individual genetic drift.  We have a local example for this genetic drift - Gardener's Delight tomato - has been saved and 'reselected' by seed companies so many times, it is difficult to know which is the original, or closest to the original.  RealSeeds have been offering two different strains.

Hence the recent breeder's selection to give us back Tom's idea of what Green Zebra should look and taste like.  I look forward to your reports and seeds.

No it's a good tomato, you sent me some seeds a few years ago and it did very well  I'm just queering the name vs description from the HSL. I've no doubt it is true to type as sent out by them, but it does sound much closer to the description Bijskij Plum?

I've got now 36 square meter bed sorted for coming maize seed plants :icon_cheers: Only one side of it is 'open' and facing next doors plot..and they don't grow any corn at all..behind their plot has THICK 10 foot hedge..and other 2 sides has high hedges too and one side will have row on climbing bean..bed is getting almost all day sun (that's if the sun will shine this summer) and is bit of a 'sun trap'..gets really warm being so sheltered.
Plan is that I'm going to hand pollinate number of plants to keep variety 'clean' and let other plants to pollinate themselves..they should not get cross pollinated anyway as none of my immediate neighbours do grow corn and each plot is behind hedging, and then there is trees, greenhouses etc if there should be some sweetcorn growers on the site, from past years experience, I know we don't have many and not near me  :icon_cheers:
Broadbean plants were planted yesterday and I'm going to set some seed straight into ground as well..to make sure we've got plenty :icon_cheers:
Another couple of weeks and I'll sow the corn :icon_thumleft:

Well done you, sounds like a super sunny spot  :toothy10:. Are you going to be growing anything underneath ? I guess it might be a little tricky for hand pollinating?

Yum, love Broad beans, my Aztec ones have only just been sown in modules, so a while behind yours. I've my fingers crossed as not that many seeds to start.

I haven't decided yet..I'll see first how the space is getting filled up but its so nice to have a big space 'problem'..I suspect I've got plenty of there to have smaller section for some other crop(s) to get more seeds :icon_cheers:
I might even tempt faith and do some outdoor toms... :icon_cheers:

Oh boy now she's done it!  :tongue5:
What about some bush tomatoes or dwarfs that you could cover with a temporary hoop-house mini poly-tunnel?
