Is erection hard?
« on: January 06, 2013, 12:23:59 »
I've just ordered myself one of these http://www.firsttunnels.co.uk/polytunnel.asp?cbowidth=12, a 12x35 foot one.

Just wondering if anyone else has one from this place and how hard they are to erect? I've watched all the videos and they make it look easy but are they really?

Well!! :toothy10:
More prosaically .. I'm 73 yrs old and getting more disabled due to knackering my back.
5+ years ago I and one capable lad put up a 3x4 first tunnel. It wasn't too hard and we put in storm plates and side ventilation. The doors are rubbish and I have made and replaced the most used one. Choose a warm day so the plastic is supple and goes easily. Follow instructions to the letter. If stuck ring up. They are most helpful.
Mind you one day I shall probably get 2 of their guys over  to completely recover it  and upgrade the side ventilation which hasn't stood the test of time. They've upgraded now and you should have the new version. But you will 2 people or you can't stretch or handle the cover properly. Have fun...

The title was chosen because I have a big one coming next week and I just wondered how hard it was going to be.

Our 40x14' communal one took 6, 3 either side. It was a bit windy but needed 2 to hold it either side and 2 to fill the trenches. Took quite a lot of doing  :toothy10:

I shall be interested to hear how you get on.

In the polytunnel book they do recommend as stated above it should be a reasonably warm still day when putting the polythene on. They also say allow three days to erect a larger one like yours and a minimum of 3 people.

Thanks Manic, mines not much smaller and there's two of us... We watched all the videos about it last night and it gave my wife nightmares. I only had a little one at our last house so the size of this one made her eyes water.

I'll take photo's and a time lapse if I remember.

I think I may be pushing my luck if I put that suggestion to the Mrs  :argue:

As mentioned only on a calm day.   A fellow plotholder nearly took off with his erection.  I thought we would have to rescue him from the nearby roof one minute and bit later unwrap him as it whirled round him.   I sympathise with your wife having nightmares.

8 years ago, when I was in a fit state, we put up a 30x12 between the 2 of us. We erected the frame, we had dug the trenches first. Cover over, bury one side. Pull like mad to tighten the skin and bury a bit at a time. then do the adjusting bars. That skin is still going and it was erected in winter on a still, frosty day  :toothy10:

It certainly attracted my attention, and I don't even have a greenhouse!  :laughing6:

I managed to get this much erected but there's far too much white stuff about now for me to carry on. Got three more hoops to go on the end yet.

This weather is getting boring now!

It's been an absolute doddle to be honest. Waiting for the weather has been the hardest part. Might be a different story when it comes to skinning it though :)
