Looking for some sugarbeet seeds

Does anybody here by any chance have any to swap for something ? Or do you know source where to get it from?
I would love to grow some...another one of those 'tick the box..been there, done that' jobs.
And even better if I could get hold of 'non-commercial' variety seeds..but any really would do.
I would love to cook and taste it as veg and not to try to make some syryp..takes too much time and effort.

While you are at it, why not try for some mangle wurzles as well,  great for winemaking!

I have an idea that Edwin Tucker do beet seeds though there is no sign of them on their website.

But as for eating them, have you turned into a horse?   :toothy10:

Not quite yet.. :toothy10: I read it that it can be eaten by humans too so I thought I have to try at least...just to 'tick the box'.

I grew Mangelworzel a few years ago. The top growth made great spinach/ beet leaves.
I cannot remember wether we ate any of the crop though.

Fodder beet although not quite so high in sugar is I think similar, only tasted fodder beet so can't be sure. Tuckers have some seed http://tuckers-seeds.com/index.php?route=product/search&keyword=fodder%20beet

I read somewhere that grated sugar beet amongst other root veg in a bake is really nice.....so then my mind started to wonder and....
I don't like beetroots and such unless they are pickled...its the earthy taste, yuck. So... I thought how I do like sweet pickled beetroot.....and thought of pickled sugar beet...and now I just have to test it and see how it would taste...or roasted sugarbeet, I do love honey roasted parsnips and carrots...so maybe it could work with sugar beet, though I doubt honey is anymore needed for that.
Never tried fodder beet or mangleworzel.... true...name is fabulous...so that will be in my 'to try before you die' list too.
One just have to experiment.. otherwise you never know what you might miss out..
I've got now couple sources for sugarbeet ...and if all goes well and they come...there might be few spare seeds to try for others too... :glasses9:

I've only tried fodder beet raw, definitely sweet tasting and similar taste to beetroot, maybe a bit of swede flavour mixed in too. I think it would be really quite sweet as a cooked veg. Good luck with your sugar beet foray, look forward to hearing how they taste.

Just a thought do they grow them around you it might be worth asking a local farmer if they have a couple to spare, you could get experimenting all the sooner!

Yes they do, not that far, but they are all lifted up now...and in past I've seen them stored in huge muddy piles on farmers yard...not that inviting..and particularly when I don't really know how they've grown. I'm bit funny of that issue...so idea is good, if I would know more the farm and their growing methods. Hey ho...its not that long to wait..it will be sowing time for those in few months time.. :icon_cheers:...and harvest later on this year...plenty of other things to eat and process before that (I hope) and as they say..time fly when you are having fun! :icon_cheers:

I've been searching some recipes and other info about SB...and came across this.. "On regular consumption, sugar beets are a great source of energy and a natural aphrodisiac."

That'll do for me...  :drunken_smilie:

The reference to Pink foot geese is because the farmers in Norfolk leave the tops for the Thousands of Pink foot geese- which come over from the scandanavian countries to overwinter- maybe you call them something different. To see them flying overhead is awe inspiring.
