spent hops

hi all
the other day whilst out trawling for manure i saw bags on the side of the road with a sign above saying good for the garden,when i opened the bags they were full of used hops,ive never heard of these nbeing good for a garden before and wondered if anyone has heard of this or even used them and how

If you search on here, you'll probably find some messages from "Supersprout", a wonderful member of the site who is sadly no longer with us, about using spent hops. I've also used them a lot, mainly as a mulch. I find they are good for that and I think they improve the texture of the soil although I don't think there's much nutrition in them. I collect them from a couple of local breweries.

We used to have a local Brewery about 2 miles up the road. Every year I got a lorry load delivered, they only charged for the delivery and I use to give the driver a couple of quid tip. It makes a good mulch also improves the soil texture I would used it now only sadly the Brewery has shut down

will be better than not, especially if they are free! :happy7:

Mulch or mix in compost or even dig in.
