Potato depth of tubers.
« on: July 15, 2012, 18:02:36 »
Just dug up our first earlies. Annabelle they are. Good crop, but Blight on the leaves so about 2 weeks earlier than normal for us. Odd thing though is the depth at which we found the tubers. They were right down on the sub-soil, some of them even growing in it. Never seen them as deep as this in 40 odd years of growing them. First time too that the soil has been damp all the way down to the subsoil too. Connected?

I've only harvested my Charlotte so far.
I had no green-backs this year. So either they're growing deeper, or my earthing up is better!
Quite agree about the moisture. It was probably at field capacity to a full spit depth, and I've not seen that for a long time in mid-July, if ever!!

I've had some green bits on my Lady Chrystls.... but my growing method is a bit odd (cos it's as much about piling on manure for next year as it is about growing spuds I guess....) THe soil is proper damp all the way down though

I grew Winston as a first early for a first time this year.  They are about a full garden fork depth under the ground.  I have had no green spuds and never earthed up this year neither.

Sounds like we might be getting a lot of volunteers next year!

WHich will be a pain given how prevalent blight is this year....
