Peat-free seed composts
« on: April 26, 2012, 17:33:12 »
Can you tell me:

- Aside from coir, which materials can be used to make seed composts?

- Can you get a loam-based seed compost? If so, is it peat-free?

Thanks!

Seed : 2 parts molehill or worm cast or loam, 1 part sand, 1 part leaf mould or compost
Potting : 7 parts soil, 3 parts compost/leaf mould, 2 parts sand, slow release fertiliser

the soil / compost should ideally be sterilised
 to prevent unwanted weeds

Can you get a loam-based seed compost? If so, is it peat-free? Yes you can buy loam-based peat free seed compost..but getting hold of it might be a different story. Not all garden centres stock it..but if you go into larger Garden Centre..I'm sure they will do it.
Not all loam-based seed compost are peat-free, so you just have to look what it say on the bags.
