No earthing needed Cam. Just dib a big hole, fill it with water & then just drop in your leek. You might need to wriggle it about to get the roots in. The soil gradually falls around the plant ;D.

Perfect age to get little ones interested, will she have her own little veg or flower bed?
Have you seen the Joseph Bentley range of apprentice tools. The are lovely.

I think leeks are my favorite I grow 4 types just because I love them,Ive made a leek bed this yr I started putting in my Bulgarian  Giant ,will put the rest in as they get to a decent size ,Ive got them growing in almost pure rotted manure ,and will feed the liquid sheep's manure once a week, think Ive lived in the N E to long and got the bug there  ;D

Earthing up - agree - no need!

My dibber is 12" long & I use most of it. Best with moist soil. If powdery, scuff off the loose stuff first so that it doesn't fall into the hole.

Me - I dribble water in afterwards - this puts a little soil onto the roots.

Bentley tools - yes, great. The' apprentice' tools are just right for the oldies!!

Mine are nowhere near pencil more like sewing thread!
Mine too - I'm wondering if they'll ever grow up to be a pencil - I don't think they've put on any growth in the last 6 weeks.

If they've been on same compost for 6 weeks..it could be that they are running out of food. Try a 'gentle' nitrogen feed and they soon start bulking up... ;)
Thank you! I will treat them to a snack  :)
