I have two half plots because there haven't been any full plots available on my site. I pay more for two halves than I would for a whole plot
I would like to hear your views on this

I have three half plots on 2 different sites. One is incredibly cheap for some reason, the other two each cost exactly half of a full plot. The system that charges you more for two halves than for one full plot seems unfair - but is it a lot more?

I chose 2 half plots because one is higher up the hill and gets sun into the late afternoon, which I like. The other one has useful shade on a very hot day (the few we've had so far).

We do the same - £24 full plot or £13 per 1/2 plot.  People who have 2 halves never want to change / move to a single full plot when offered as and when full plots become available.  They are offered before we look at those on the waiting list so cannot whinge about the rent differences.  Technically, its the same as foodstuff - its cheaper to buy 1 large pack than 2 small separate ones totalling the same size.

From my limited investigations of rents, it seems that there are 3 main methods of charging in this country

... by the square yard or metre

... in bands - plots up to 200 sq yards at x, 210-400 sq. yards at y etc

... and by making it up as you go along ::)

We pay by the pole - rounded up to the nearest pole (£4/pole).

These are next year's rent charges for Birmingham city council allotments, I've put this year's charges in brackets.


                          ¼                       ½                       FULL PLOT

Under 60          £40 (£20)         £50 (£30)                   £75 (£40)

Over 60            £20   (£10)         £25  (£15)                  £37.50 (£20)

The council puts allotments into 4 bands, depending on size -

Quarter plots       up to 100 sq.yds
Half plots             101 - 200 sq.yds
Full plots              201 - 400 sq.yds
Large - none on our site - 401 - 600sq.yds.


You can see from this that Shirley will be paying £50 in total for her two half plots, against £37.50 for a full size one.

Our Council opened up six smaller than average plots

 "For small families and we are sick of people taking on a full plot then giving up".   

Two very good sentiments,  so why have the rents of these 'smaller' plots crept up to the same rent of a full plot ? ? ? >:(

I think the councils need a good shake up to get rid of the dross. Perhaps we would then get some sense out of them
