Any surplus Ulluco or Mashua?
« on: March 05, 2012, 20:50:53 »
I'm a sucker for anything a little bit different and love my Oca so thought I might try some ulluco or mashua if anybody could spare some. Would be happy to swap for something if you have a wish list, or whatever terms suit you best.
Cheers. Jon.

Bought ulluco from Ebay a couple of years back.  They were titchy little tubers but now after a couple of years trying to grow them I am now down to one titchier little tuber.  Haven't even managed to taste one.  Mashua didn't do any better either.

Any idea what the problem was? Just not warm enough? Were you growing outside or under glass?

In case anybody is following this thread I thought I'd let you know I bought some Ulluco from EBay today as another thread was advertising  a £5 off deal through Paypal. Assuming they arrive OK, I should now have some ulluco to swap for mashua if anybody fancies that.

Grew my ulluco and mashua in buckets outside then moved into g/h as autumn closed in.  Perhaps they are daylight sensitie or something.

Three mashua tubers currently on EBay for £15.40 including postage, with one day to go. Does anybody know what a realistic price for this should be and where you can get it if not EBay? I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on something I've never tasted. It does look good though.

Well! The postage is fair but I felt like a crook when I charged 50p each for mine.

Sorry I'm a bit late to this thread. I'd say Mashua would be a bit of an aquired taste  ;D I think it is a bit late for sending some this year but if you remind me at the end of the year, harvest permiting...

aquired taste  ???...how would you describe it?  Pumpkinlover has offered me some later on this year to grow next year..that's if she does well with it  ;) But if taste is not 'nice'.... :-\...I'll have to think about it.. :-\

It's a bit of a mixture really quite hard to describe, raw it has quite a hot taste similar in a way to a hot raddish or fresh Wassabi but with a bit of zing. Cooked it is much more mellow. It's worth growing for the flowers alone, particularly Ken Aslet which flowers much earlier than other varieties. Mine started flowering a couple of weeks back, lots of lovely flowers, very pretty :)
