Chilli seedlings ready for potting on
« on: March 04, 2012, 18:09:22 »
My chillies in the propagator are ready to be potted on now, apart from the Pretty in Purple on the right which I did yesterday.

The bigger ones were sown on Jan 7th and the others on Jan 16th

There are also some tomato seedlings for the competition.

Your's are massive!  When did you sow them?

Mine are in a heated propagator in an unheated greenhouse, but when I pot them on and take them out of it I will put heat on in the greenhouse.

Your's are massive!  When did you sow them?I did the biggest ones in first week of January and rest couple of weeks after. Mine are all still in tiny pots. They are under artificial lights but after the seeds emerged in propagator, they haven't got any additional heat and are kept in spare bedroom floor in about 16'C when lights are not on.
I'm really surprised how well chillies have taken to my new light bulbs and I've only used blue light so far.
Toms are not too keen of the light, they look healthy enough, but could be better. I've got red bulb too, so tomorrow, once I've bought another cable for the bulb, I'm going to put both colours for the toms...I think they will prefer that better.
I also invested, just to trial, some specific chilli feed..'Chilli Focus'. And I've been giving a 'seedling doze' of that once a week.
I'm sooo DETERMINED to get glut of chillies this year..last year was rubbish >:(

We both sowed them at roughly the same time so it just shows what a difference the lighting makes.

Where are you going to grow them afterwards?  Mine will stay in the greenhouse but if there are too many I'll put some outside.  I am hoping to have some ready for our plant sale in May.

I only sowed the tomatoes on 23 Feb which is very early for me.

Where are you going to grow them afterwards? Oh..umm..ah... :-X ::) Well..I'm going to stuff my windowsills once I can't fit anymore plants under the lights. And depending of the spring..I'm hoping to get them into GH sometime in April. If the weather is still dodgy..I just have to put one of those 3 tier mini-GH inside glass GH with small heater on bottom shelf during nights. That should do for few weeks.. ;)

The difference is an attempt to recreate the different seasons' light.
In summer, when the sun is overhead, the light tends to be blue as the rays pas through the atmosphere by the shortest route.
During autumn though, when the sun is much lower, the rays have to pass through more of the atmosphere to reach our plant. This gives a light generally more red in nature.

That's how I understand it anyway.  :-\

Blue light is more for green growth and red for flowering/fruiting.
