Granny Smith questions
« on: January 26, 2012, 08:03:24 »
A friend has just given me two bare root Granny Smith trees and have a couple of questions. One of them is about pollination, is there anything I need to bear in mind, on the allotment I already have another apple tree (Fuji), pear, plum, apricot and cherry. Is it ok to put them in now? It's freezing at night (down to about -4º recently) but sunny and warmish during the day. Cheers.
Location: North East Spain - freezing cold winters, boiling hot summers with a bit of fog in between.

If the soil isn't frozen... staying frozen then it's fine to put them in...
many apple varieties need a cold period to flower properly... not a problem in your part of Spain but worth remembering if you live in a hot country...  :)

Are Granny Smith and Fuji in the same pollination group?

or adjoining groups... so that the flowering overlaps...

Thanks Saddad - much appreciated.

Looks like they are pollination partners, Digeroo, http://www.orangepippintrees.com/pollinationchecker.aspx?v=1127 - just read this which was very helpful http://www.orangepippintrees.com/articles/pollination-of-fruit-trees

Ashridge Nurseries do a really good pollination chart on their web site
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"
