I have £40 Christmas money what would be worth buying?
« on: January 03, 2012, 18:38:18 »
Me again, told you I'd be around more lol

Ok so, I have all the basics

spade, fork, dutch hoe, rake, wheelbarrow, trowels, hand fork, dibber, twisty cultivator thingy,  I've got a wolf garten multi tool handle and a sort of hoe come cultivator thingy on it.

I also have a heated propagator

I've got debris netting, black plastic sheeting, wood, canes.

and most importantly a camping stove and kettle.

Is there anything I don't have that you get lots of use from that you recommend?

Is a draw hoe useful? My budget is £40.

Vicki?

Onion hoe is next on my list.  What about multipurpose potting compost?  A mini digital radio for the plot ;)

Lidl/aldi sold some very nice stainless steel handhoes last year very nice.  Cheap.

It has to be seeds. fertilizer, potting compost or perhaps some fruit bushes.  I really want a mirabelle tree as well.

How will you be watering? A large well balanced watering can (or three) is a must on my plot...... ;D
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Lots of suggestions, I'm liking the idea of fruit bushes, but I think I might go for a big metal watering can,  I have got a plastic one but its a bit dodgy.

If it was me, I'd wait for the lidl/aldi bargains to come in, maybe a nice cold frame or something ?

Big metal watering cans can be quite heavy to use when you need to do lot of work...particularly if you need to sink it into tub or some other container to get water out.
Does it feel like money is burning hole into your pocket?... ;D ;D
If you are not in rush to spend it..wait for while..once you've been working on plot for while...you start thinking "I could just do with...".
Or how about investing some insect barrier mesh..it is 'must by' if you are planning to grow some carrots...I use it over many crops..not perharps all the time but at least while the plants are young and trying to get established.
Have you got any water storage? Some waterbutts perharps?

I know I should wait, but like all Moms if I don't spend it on me quick, I know I'll see something for one or both of the kids and I can't resist spoiling them.

I have a waterbutt, I got one free from the tip lol, I don't dunk for water as my husband built me a brick base for the waterbutt so I can get the can under the tap.

arrghh I just don't know. I think I might have to hide the money until I see something I really want.

I could do with a new pair of boots, wierdly I can't work with my coat/jacket on. my mum bought me a waterproof sleeveless body warmer thing and even that drives me mad and I end up in a T shirt even at the temperatures we have now.

Can you see why I'm struggling, I'm just too difficult  ;)

Hi
I recomend lots of pair of fleece gloves. Warm easy to wear and washable and keep your hand clean when you are weeding.
Id also say fruit trees , you can train them against the wall and so they dont have to take up to much room but will reward you every year. Uusally have them in aldi/lidl for less than a fiver

All you really need is a trowel, spade, fork dibber some pots twine labels and seed. the rest youll pick up as you need if you ever need them.
Most of all have fun!

A mini greenhouse or two, depending what you can find them for. eBay is the best place.

My daughter asked me for gauntlets for Christmas. She is fed up with chopping down nettles and brambles and getting scratched and stung. The ones I got are leather almost up to the elbow.
