Thanks Goodlife ! Just ordered some . Funnily enough I received that catalogue this very morning ...... I had no idea they supplied specialist trees like this .... Jungle Plants also have it . I,ve not grown these before ,excited , hope the seed is nice and fresh though . Has anyone on here tried these ?  Would be nice to know where the seeds have come from  .    I would like to try some from a local old monkey puzzle tree if there are any around here in Cornwall ? It is an ancient looking  , amazing tree  .

Theres a big one growing down the village that has cones every year. I've never asked for one but it could be doable. I think the house is let into flats. I probably just have to get a cone off the floor. The trees only make cones when they are a good age. About 100 I think.

Hi Green Lily , thanks for your reply . I,ve sent you a private message . Take care under the trees in this stormy weather . There must be a few cones lying around after these gales .   I am beginning to notice them as we drive around Cornwall , magnificent trees.  Cheers  :) Debs

Is it actually setting seed or just making cones? The reason I ask is that monkey puzzles are single sex so most trees in the UK drop unfertilised cones (or dead male cones) - if you have access to one actually setting fruit you're really lucky!

It sounds as if you lots of space of you are planning to grow one or more of these huge trees..... I know two very small front gardens around here with young monkey puzzles right in front of their windows, and wonder if they know how enormous and light reducing they will become, though admittedly very slow growing.

I hadn't thought about the sex issue ::) I'm going into the village tomorrow all being well and I'll have a search around. I've no idea whether these cones have fertile seeds or not. Will report back. There are other trees in the area - they must have been popular about 1900 I guess ;)

I've been down and sifted through a huge mulch of cones and seed cases from 2 trees. Nothing fertile. Everything empty therefore we have 2 unfertilized female trees or 2 males--if they make cones and seed cases to that extent. Sorry its back to the seed catalogues if you really want one of these lank plants... ::)

Thankyou for all your kind replies . I have now got  my seeds from the catalogue and are potted up . Thankyou Greenlily for searching for me .
Tai Haku  - I am just learning  and you are correct ....there needs to be a mummy and daddy tree .  Is there a way of identifying them ?
Artichoke  - I too have seen them planted in silly spaces . .. but I have a big garden and in no danger to my place or the neighbours .

Woody ... I hope you are a patient sort of person , our MP tree is 25years old and is now 14 ft tall, we had it as a 1ft pot plant. I hang the bird feeders on its lower branches, drives the squirrels nuts !

Picman you beat me to it... I was going to ask woody if she was patient.. a neighbour we had one in Zimbabwe and I think I grew faster than it!! Dont be put off woody and enjoy the tree. They are great to have a round. Imaging a hedge around the lottie site - that would stop any fence jumpers!!

If you are very patient, according to Wikipedia after 30 years it might produce edible seeds.
