help with acacia tree needed
« on: October 09, 2011, 13:12:27 »
I had a pot bound acacia tree in the garden inherited from my land-lord, his OH just loved to shove everything in pots!!

It was on its last legs, 2 of the shoots had died & some of the branches had aswell, so i decided to plant it out. Then things just got worse, what few leaves it had died off & the main trunk of the tree started to die.  It stands about 5 foot high & ild guess that the top 2-3 foot has died  :-[  Should i cut down the dead wood & if so how far away from the healthy part of the tree should i cut?

There are plenty of healthy leaves around the base of the tree, looks like its gonna turn into a bush.
Is loving how the twins are really getting into planting seeds this year!  two for the price of one!! :D http://i46.tinypic.com/zy7ww8.jpg[/img]

It would help if you knew if it was a wattle or a mimosa type of acacia. Wattles are drought resistent so a pot grown one will die back to the base and wait until it gets water  to start growing again.

A Mimosa will go searching for water and put up runners if the spreading roots break the soil surface. Both varieties need loads of room and are not only really suitable for parks and large gardens.
