I've followed the instructions on Big Pumpkins for measuring the pumpkin, but I can't work out what to do next. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/viewarticle.asp?id=37&gid=4

Would someone who isn't as mathematically challenged as me please work it out....

These are the measurements -

1)  circumference, parallel to ground  97"
2)  from ground up and over biggest part to ground on other side  60"
3)  from stem end to blossom end  56"

Thank you  :)

I plugged your numbers into Excel and got,,,,,,,,,,

wait for it................

fanfare................
212.5 lbs by the OTT method or 236.5 lbs by the combined method!
I plugged the numbers he gave for his example into my spreadsheet to make sure my formulae are right and it agrees.

ETA: If you have Excel on your computer let me know and I'll label up the columns and send the file to you so that you can just plug new numbers in anytime.

Good Grief!  :o

I can't believe it's that much - the heaviest I've had before was 176 pounds.  We will have to wait till the weigh-in on Oct. 14 to see how accurate it is.

Thank you so much for working it out, I would never have been able to do it.  I do have Excel, that's very kind of you, thanks.

Do you think this formula works for marrows?

I measured the marrow too,  ;)

1) 78"
2) 25"
3) 40"

Well, he reckons +/- @5% so you may have grown a monster.  I don't think it works for a marrow - the calculation is based on it being a roughly spherical object.  I've put the marrow numbers in and the two results are wildly different, whereas for the pumpkin they're not that far apart.

I'll tart it up and send the spreadsheet to you.

Betty.

There is a chart here. http://www.gvgo.ca/articles/
Go to files / downloads and then click on :
008 Stellflug 91-450" OTT Chart (compiled by Russ Landry - Adobe PDF, MS Excel)

Simply add up your measurements (which will be the OTT column) and then they will correspond to a weight.

Hope this helps

Pete.

There is also a formula for marrows.

Please see

Pete's pumpkin chart gives the same answer +/- 1lb as the Excel spreadsheet so I'd stick with the chart as it's easier to do.  Looks like you have grown a monster this year!

Hi Ceres,

Did you do the chart yourself ?

I have one also where you put the numbers in manually and it gives you a circ and OTT measurement (done by a friend cos I`m not clever enough. LOL)

I just followed the instructions for doing the spreadsheet in the link that Betty gave in her first post.  I'm not clever enough either!

212.5 lbs by the OTT method or 236.5 lbs by the combined method!

I added up your measurements betty and get a total of 213" (OTT) which provides an estimated weight of 214 lbs

If you were to estimate on circumference alone then 97" cc would give and estimated 253 lbs.

I'll measure it tomorrow.

All the leaves on one of the marrows look as though they are dying.  They are covered in mildew too.  It's two weeks till the competition.  :(

We didn't go for weight at our local pub's pumkin competition, we went just on circumference!   I built a cramp from a big 'lecky cable drum and loads of lead weights.    :o     Yep, I won ! ! !     ;D       Cheers,     Tony.

That sounds interesting - how much did it measure?
