starting them early
« on: July 15, 2011, 19:37:42 »
As an ex nursery teacher I find a 3 yrear old who wants to engage me in conversation on the bus quite irresistable!
This was today's......
little boy: "You've got leaves!"
Me: "Yes, would you like to see what it is?"
(finds baby slug and holds it out to show, then pulls large cabbage out from bag)
little boy: "What's that?"
Me: "It's a cabbage."
little boy: "I like cabbage!"
Me:"That's good!
All of this was much preferable to the Spiderman impressions he'd being previously engaged in.
I then offered him a broad bean to try.  It was very tricky to stretch out over the head of the elderly gentleman in front!
The broad bean was not very much appreciated, and so I offered a carrot, complete with leaves.  He was thrilled by this, and started to  talk to his grandma about it.
Little boy: "It's got mud on!" At this point I set off with my lovely explanation about it growing in the soil from a tiny seed, and he started to eat it, mud and all!
Grandma did make an attempt to dissuade him, with no effect, as the carrot remained in his hand and he continued to enjoy it.  She did say that it should be washed, but gave no reason given for this.  I was itching to clarify, but as the bus was pretty full by then felt I couldn't say any more.
They eventually got off, her holding the leaves and him munching away happily on his nice fresh carrot.  Obviously the soil gave it added flavour!

Matthew(3) has his own bit of our 'plotment'. I have to stop him eating strawberries that are nearly green, any bit of red on them and he would eat it. He also picks carrots and would eat them from the ground, I must admit, I do wash them  ;D

Sweet!
They seem to like unexpected and slightly forbidden foraging rather than veg on a plate, don't they?

My 3 year old picks and eats parsley and green onion leaves while playing in the garden but if I put them on a plate at mealtimes he won't touch them and regards them with deep suspicion.
