What a miserable year
« on: July 12, 2011, 19:31:43 »

What can I say,, we don't one apricot on two trees this year, where as
we normally get pounds and pound except for one year about 15 years ago , we only had 3 apricots..
also not one plum that normally fruits very well, and not one apple.  that being said.. looks like it will be a bumper bumper year for Blackberries, blackcurrants  and elderberries, and there could be a few pears on both trees, nothing like normal but some.....
We think it was the weather  first its so hot you cant breath next it's cold, we had heat on in June.
Oh and runner beans are in flower quite well but the plants are only about18 inches tall.
sorry to be a moaning Minnie but I got it off my chest. ;    qahtan
PS,,, I actually bought imported apricots this morning. :( :(

How disappointing. Well, there's always next year. Enjoy the blackcurrants.  :)

The perils of the weather!
Last year was a bumper apple year for me, this year is bad.  I have quite a few on my scrumptious (no where near last years crop though)  but only 4 or 5 on my Lord Lambourne.  I have zero fruit on another couple of trees and the cherry lost its fruit too, along with a few worcesterberries.

I think what happened was the hot sunny days allowed my scrumptious to flower early and set some fruit itself but when my lord lambourne started flowering  2 weeks later we got hit by hard frosts.

Hopefully next year will be better

Sorry to hear things not going your way.  We had a hard frost last year when the apples were in flower and so had quite a small crop, but this year was the opposite and every flower has produced an apple, so I think I may have all your apples on my tree as well.

But for me every year somethings do better than others.  For  me 2009 was the year of the leeks and pumpkins, 2010 was beans and carrots, and this year it will be apples and strawberries.

But my beans are really struggling and the sweet corn will not be as good as last year.

We have an abundance of apples but no apricots for the second year. If it don't do any good next year its out .
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

This has been the best year by far for soft fruit for me and my little pear tree is heaving, but my beans are not good (probably blackfly ::)). However I have noticed that there are very few sloes on the hedgerows again this year.
Smile, it confuses people.

Have seen plenty of Apple Trees around that seem to be doing well.

Last year on my tiny veggie plot that was had so many Beans it was crazy.

Tried some Beans in my Cathedral garden but puny and slow compared to last year.

We have had a poor summer, lots of cold nights so I think this has not helped.

It is a merry go round isn't it, some years good some bad, that's the fun of gardening.  My apple trees are amazing this year, I have had to help the June drop as there are still too many on the trees.  Even my little one at the lottie that had two apples last year is laden, and new trees at home that had only a few last year are much fuller :) :)  It is the luck of the draw and I am sorry for those who don't have fruit this year but maybe it will be the other way round next year :)

Well I am in the Niagara Peninsula, Ontario. Canada,
         qahtan

Isn't that one of the most wonderful fruit growing areas normally?  We biked around the lakes last year and enjoyed the local produce very much.

It's a good year for the bees, on this side of the Atlantic at least.

Niagara is as you say one of the worlds beautiful growing areas, though not on the scale of California, but we don't do too bad.
we can boast over 60 wineries in the area,,,,  along with lots of fruits, from strawberries in June till pumpkins in late September, it is a pleasure to drive through  the area.
I expect most of the farmers are doing ok as they irrigate, though my daughter bought cherries last week and said they were not as large and they were quite soft.
Next to come is peaches, should be yum, but who knows.
it's a good job we have a little stash in the freezer, and as jelly....

My tree fruit is showing off this year and I've had so much soft fruit I've left the morayberries and morellos to the birds..
Runners look pretty but not setting well. Outdoor toms are struggling. I'm go back to Marmande and G Delight next year.
Its pretty cold here again and my one pumpkin plant is miserable although courgettes seem happy enough. Mind you I've had some classy lettuce with it being so cool. ;) Here in N. Lincs the farmers just got a shot of rain in time to swell the grain otherwise the local harvest would have been almost nix. Definitely not an easy year
