What's new for you this year?
« on: January 29, 2005, 16:55:03 »
I'm always interested in what new things people are growing, it gives me ideas on new things I could try.

This year I plan to grow some things new to me: Gem (Rolan) squash, patty pans, purple cauliflower, fennel and tam jalapeno chillis.

What new things do you plan to grow this year?

This year its mostly new varities of differet veg I am trying. However, the following are new veg that I have not tried in the last 2 seasons since I started growing veg.
Dwarf beans - purple queen.
Turnip - golden ball.

Furthermore, I am going to try sprouts, courgettes, pumkins and chilli-peppers from seed (as opposed to buying plants).

Things I have never grown before that I have brought seeds for are;
Sweetcorn
Carrots (red ones)
Peas
French Beans
Cauliflower
Courgette
Lettuce
Brought some artichoke bulbs as well which look good.

Lots new for me too as it's my first year with an allotment.  I'm particularly looking forward to:

Garlic
Sweetcorn
Solanum Muricatum - Pepino (Tree Melon)
Ambrosia Melon
Sweet Peppers
Purple Jalapenos
Madonna Lillies
New potatoes
... and having space to grow toms as well as chillies ... and maybe this will be the year that I get a Nectarine to ripen!

Always experimented, so nothing new as such, more odd varieties like purple sprouts, purple spring onions, purple/coloured carrots.  oooo Asparagus and globe artichokes!  They were all planted on the plot last year, so nothing to harvest then, but this year I am hoping to crop from both.

new for me-
melons-charleston grey (thanks to you who recommended), blenheim orange and an HSL one hero of lockinge.

pickling onions-if i can't grow them big then it doesn't matter!
some fabulous sounding tomatoes (thankyou to you know who you are ;))
and lots of others, thanks to those who swapped with me on this board-lemongrass, french beans, yellow courgettes, protea, scottish bluebells, poppies, delphs, mushrooms, cima di rapa, and lots of new varieties of veg.

and it would be new to me this year if i could manage to grow, not kill a cucumber, and produce something remotely edible from it!

lots of new things - but one that might be new to a lot of people:
oca
from viva verde catalogue. Some sort of pinkish tuber. Probably won't grow, or maybe it'll take over the whole plot, or maybe it'll taste disgusting. God I'm so negative...

My first year with an allotment so pretty much everything's new for me!  :D

I did grow some small amounts of climbing beans and courgettes last year and so I'm branching out with a few new varieties - some lovely golden courgettes and round ones, some purple beans.  I'm also really excited about trying butternut squash.  ;D

Other than that it's all pretty bog standard - pots, onions, carrots, parsnips, broccoli, salad stuff, toms, chillies etc.  Can't wait to start eating my own stuff though!!  8)
Anyone for Pumpkin Soup?

I want to grow leeks this year and broccoli, as I like them a lot. I will also try carrots.

As usual I will be having potatoes, pumpkins and onions.

Won't be doing cucumbers and sweetcorn again as I will be limited for space and I didn't reall eat them much/ are not a favourite!

Although last year was my first growing season on the allotment, I grew quite a few different vegetables, and its mostly the different varieties of the same veg this year. But I'm also going to try Celeriac and Cape Gooseberry for the first time at the allotment.
I got a greenhouse last summer, a little late in the growing season but successfully grew toms, peppers and aubergine in it. This year I'm going to try melon and cucumber. I don't know what variety yet, but as I only want one plant of each I will buy them as plants, not grow from seed.
Who planted all these weeds?

Definitely more squashes: marina de chioggia, festival, pink banana and acorns.

I will try soya beans too, oh and gherkins

As a change I'm also going to swap from loose leaf lettuce to romaine types, mainly to use in Caesar salad.

Spuds, onions, carrots, parsnips, broccolli, cabbage, cauli, leeks, peas, beans, spring onions, ummm and a few more that I can't remember.

We're hoping to drop our riverford veg boxes next year - so we're attemping to grow quite a bit.

Aubergine and celery.

I also have some new rhubarb plants this is their second year so will be able to pick. Last year was only able to pick from one old plant inherited from previous allotment holder. Fortunately another allotment holder allowed me to pick a reasonable amount from his plants as my son loves rhubarb and custard and rhubarb crumble.

I have had great problems with having rhubarb plants sent via the post. Two years ago the three plants sent were all mouldy on arrival and just died off (they were 3 weeks in the postal system). These were replaced the following year but only two of the three plants survived. This year the replacement arrived ok so will have to see if it produces anything.
