Composting bread

Is it ok to compost bread? I know things like meat and oil encourage rats, but wasn't sure about bread.

no no - you'll get rats. Put it out for the birds instead (as long as it's not baby bird time).
gone to pot :D

The basic rule for avoiding vermin is don't put out anything that has been cooked. Although I sometimes pop in a bit of lightly steamed veg!!
All this stuff composts - and like I've said before - my plot neghbour puts EVERYTHING on his heap and he gets rats and he says it gives the foxes something to chase.... each to his own I suppose.

Or get a wormery.

Still by putting the bread on the lawn (which I do) you'll be fertilising it indirectly :)

Put the bread out early or it will bring in the foxes & the neighbours' cats overnight. = Tim

And if you are worried about bursting baby birds bake the bread in the oven until it is hard and dry and then crumble it for the adults.
Gardening is the great leveller.

Thanks all, I'll chuck it out for the birds next time.
