Plants grow better because of the increased sunlight, them being closer to the sun 'n all.   ;)

Blimey!
I always thought plants in raised beds grew taller because the roots were further away from gravity...  :-[

erm,

1, makes gardening easier / possible for wheel-chair users
2, provides added depth of growing media
3, improved drainage
4, improved soil-warming potential
5, makes it easier to alter soil P.H. in a confined area

etc etc
You couldn't make it up!

It can be useful; if you need to import clean soil, or you want to have an acid bed in limy soil, you suffer from waterlogging, or you have trouble bending. It's very fashionable right now though, and I can't help feeling a lot of people do it because of this. It's a lot of work if you're putting in raised beds for their own sake.
