Topic: Planting seeds

Just started with the 2011 seeds
.

So far I have got tomato, peppers, chillies, sweet peas and peas in.

Anything else I might have forgotten which I can start off indoors in January?

Thats a good idea for a thread... I wasn't thinking about starting planting much till Feb... Perhaps I'll put a few of those in as an experiment...

Anything else due a January start?

Id love to start now,but since our little kitten systematically decimated the christmas tree over and over again,Im not going to risk having precious seedlings lying around,shall wait till warm enough to start in the greenhouse!

last year at this time I started some basil not really expecting much to happen but I had to quench my seed sowing addiction  ;D and lo and behold it did brilliantly and had so much I was able to make a lot of pesto (generally seemed a good year for basil all through the season) so I might do it again this year and sow some next week, keeping the plants as bushy house plants really and not for taking to the greenhouse -  but sod's law I bet.........

will be sowing more salads in the greenhouse tomorrow if I get there - everything else can wait

I am ready but the weather/light conditions are not so it will be a few weeks yet before I start this is my method of predicting the start date.


As I general rule I use my spring bulbs as a 'barometer' as to when to sow.

I do this based on the fact that mother nature knows best!

I sow my early stuff e.g biennials I didn't sow last autumn when the snowdrops appear in my garden.

I start my veg off when the crocus appear.

Bedding plants when the daffs come into flower.

And I plant out when the daffs are over and ready for cutting back.

I find this caters for long/short winters.

For the record my snowdrops have not appeared yet.

Thanks canendula I was considering soft herbs. Will sow a few.

I will do a little flowerpot of leeks too goodlife. They transplant simply so  nothing lost there.

It is surprising how long it takes to sow a few seeds..........Innit?.

I have onions, and yesterday started some chilies , bit early I know, but I cant wait!

Tee Gee - that sounds very organised but very simple to manage.   Thanks -  though given that my greenhouse is currently full of stuff I'm trying to protect from winter I can't see me sowing anything till after the daffs are out.
