allotment society
« on: August 05, 2003, 02:08:02 »
There are 90 allotments on our site here in Aberdeen. We have been talking about starting a society to give us more clout with the local council. Does anyone know of a website with instructions or guidelines in starting a society. We were also thinking of giving out factsheets to anyone taking on a new plot with ideas on how to clear it of weeds, what grows best locally and times of the year for sowing, as this far north we are about six weeks behind every one else and a lot of newcomers are put off when their seedlings get frosted.
              many thanks
                         Raymond

Join the NSALG.  If there are enough of you at the site who are willing to join, there are plenty of benefits.  (Unfortunately, most of our site is old codgers who don't want to do anything)

Hello there - the man who wrote this http://www.btinternet.com/~richard.wiltshire/allot1.htm, Richard Wiltshire, is (I think) the research officer for QED, and has been involved in all sorts of allotment-management issues.

It would be a good site to explore - text-heavy, but well worth it.  And possibly drop him a message?

There's also the Scottish Allotments and Gardens Society - with an e-mail address; they're on http://www.sags.org.uk/.

90 plots - wow! We're only 12, here --- and a fox, brambles, and local kids!  Where in Aberdeen is the site (I grew up there!)?

All best, Gavin

The plots are at Garthdee field on Garthdee road just across from the Norwood hotel.
