When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

This looks lovely..can you get a name. I have a smashing Middle East Sweets and desserts cook book but no pictures. I love to collect these kinds of recipes.

Looks to me like a baklava.

There are several recipes around Greece, Cyprus & Turkey  using filo pastry, nuts dried fruit, honey or sugar syrup

Thanks PH, but if Baklava is made from filo pastry I don't think that's what they were.  They were pretty dense, but crumbly, with some chopped nuts and a thickish coating of icing sugar. There wasn't any dried fruit in them.

They have selections of food from different countries at Aldi and Lidl so you might get some from there. I get the big jars of butter beans and chick peas when they do the polish selection.

I really like those sweet pastries. Here in the sunny south (well, North Londonish anyway) we have a chain of shops called TFC (Turkish food centre) and they do loads of this type of sweetmeat.
I see you are in Perry barr on your photo, googling, there seems to be a Turkish supermarket maybe in your area at International Supermarket, 140 Soho Road, Birmingham, West Midlands B21 9LN
Hope this helps.

JennyM - we have a TFC near us in SE London and it is one of the best shops around.  Cheap as well! 5 packs of pitta bread for 99p and the corriander/parsley/dill are cheaper than anywhere else.
The diced lamb is absolutely gorgeous but I stay well away from the sweet pastries - I lived above a Greek baker for years and the smell got too much for me in the end..
Moved to Portugal - ain't going back!

For what its worth, the Baklava that is sold at a Turkish deli I use, is nothing like the Baklava they sell in a Punjabi sweet centre that I also use.

Never mind what they are, whats the taste like, lol??!!
