Topic: Help needed with auto spade.

I was lucky.......Or I think I was  :-\

I found an old terrex spade at the back of a second hand shop for £25. So I bought it.


I've tried it out on my allotment and it  'sort of' works. After looking at lots of pictures on the internet, I wonder if the torsion spring has been 'put on wrong'

It does seem to quite loosely fit in place rather than fit snuggly and seem different from any photos I've seen.

.........I do wonder if someone in their attempt to get it working properly has bent the spring arms to a new shape.  ::)

I'll show you mine, if can suggest how to fix it!.










Or am I worrying over nothing and they are just weak pathetic springs?

Is your missing the footplate?

No Mine has the foot plate, but I have only photographed the top section.

It looks like someone has 'bent' the spring arms and fitted the spring slightly differently.

Does any one have pics of the spring layout on their spade?

Hi -You will realise its One of the best things you,ll ever buy once you get used to it -  Looking at mine that spring looks well naffed up - so heres a place to look - http://backsavergardentools.co.uk/ and theres a video on how to use it too as well as spares,  but also you can get a spring here - ebay item number 200526016005 - dont know how good they are though - also they say to preserve the life of that spring then its best to unhook one side whilst the spade isnt being used. - have a good look at this site too - should explain a little more.

Springs arrived!!!!!

Now I've just got to fit it right..........rather than the dogs dinner of a job that's on there now!

any tips on technique?

I had one for a while adn never quite got on with it.... always made me think some decided that horticultural implements should resemble siege weapons crossed with a bit of man-trap.... that said I've seen an expert wield one and he was way quicker down a bed than I was and he was in his eighties.....
