Carrot bed
« on: October 10, 2010, 11:17:06 »
Part of my lotty is ideal for growing carrots and is manure free, would working in compost do more harm than good before I sow my carrots next year, our local recycling centre sells 40 Ltr bags of compost for £2.50 and it is really good stuff so I'm going to grab myself some, :)

I can also source recycled very cheaply.  Not tried it yet for carrots but strawberries seem to like it.  Worked it into part of a bed and planted out some runners and they are looking very bonny.

If you use it to raise up a bed you get longer/cleaner/fly free carots...
but just worked in it will improve your crop too.  :)

The Leicestershire stuff is the same price bagged ......  or £10+VAT a tonne, if you have the capability to drive to the Ashby site and pick it up.

Certainly worth thinking about at that price

Wiltshire have it for £1 a bag but you have to fill your own bag.  It is easiest with a bag with a large opening because filling a plastic bag on your own is very difficult.   Also you have to be able to lift the bag into the car.  The system rather favours young strong male types.
