Winter hardy spring onion question.....
« on: October 09, 2010, 08:03:29 »
I planted my winter hardy spring oinions last month in a pot of compost at my allotment and they are growing well.  I have just been reading these need to go in a frost free place........is this correct?  How do other people grow their winter hardy spring onions?

Mine got well and truly frozen last winter, and some survived at any rate. I'm not sure how well they cope with frost in a pot though.

Winterhardy white Lisbon certainly makes winters here without losses.  I think they are mostly quite tough, even the ones not quoted as winterhardy.  I wouldn't worry too much if they were in the ground.

They get colder in pots though.  Can you transplant them?

I'll agree with the others, onions in pots and containers are much more of a problem over winter than in the ground. If you've got nowhere permanent to transplant them to, could you just bury the pots in a sheltered spot then lift them again in the spring ?
