A question about raspberries
« on: April 12, 2010, 15:51:13 »
Having just got our lottie we've been having a good look around to see what is already growing there it looks like we've inherited some raspberry canes..well the few leaves starting to come through look like raspberries.
Anyway having browsed the internet to try and find out what needs doing with them i am now very confused.
As i understand it there are Autumn and Summer raspberries and depending on your type that determines what you need to do pruning wise, so not having a clue about this and assuming that there isn't a simple way to tell do i just now sit back and see what happens? Any advice very much appreciated! Also there are some daffs planted in the middle of them...will these be ok just left where they are or will they interfere with the raspberry growth?

I would leave them to grow and fruit later this year.
I don't know what varieties my raspberries are so I leave them be and just prune any obvious dead wood around about now. Experts will probably tut at this but they all grow and fruit okay!  :)
I'd also leave the daffodils alone and replant them after the raspberries have finished fruiting.

Just leave them be....if they fruit this year..they are autumn..those you cut down next winter..
If they do not fruit...they are summer and you cut them down next summer after they have fruited..
Daffs are ok...I've got tons of bluebells...... ::)..and you never get rid of them without disturbing your canes...just enjoy the flowers ;D

Absolutebeginner you're welcome! I love raspberries but few ever get seem off the plot let alone reach home!  :)
I like daffodils and have several groups scattered around my plot.
By the way welcome to A4A!
