canna care
« on: November 13, 2004, 21:38:19 »
at the risk of feeling really daft, having had cannas for 2 years now, i'm wondering whether i'm doing the best for them.
they come into the greenhouse in pots to overwinter.
i cut down the stalk after all the leaves are finished, and just let the compost dry out slightly.
new growth sprouts from along the tuber in spring.
is this how others care for theirs? could i do better? my cannas never quite seem .....luxuriant, which is the effect i want.
what would happen if i left the stalk? would it just go squishy and need cutting down anyway?
help please!!!!!!

Kerry - I do exactly as you do with my Cannas.  I have them in quite a large pot and they have been beautiful this year.  The only thing is I think they are getting a bit pot bound so I am in a quandry as to whether to leave them or split them.   I wonder if anyone else here has any further advice ???

Pat - I had one canna last year and split it into three. Gave one to mum, lost one over the winter, so still have one. It performed much better this year.

I must remember to bring my canna in.
gone to pot :D
