help
« on: September 26, 2003, 03:54:44 »
After yet another attempt to get onto the Beeb boards could someone help me ? It will not let me log on or re-register (I am not e-mailed with a new password). Could someone, on my behalf, ask a host why this is? I have been trying for about two months off and on with no luck.
I saw the question about purple vegetables in Garden clinic and have a couple of suggestions but it won't let me reply obviously. perhaps someone could pass these on? Purple potatoes (I grew Purple Viking once, purple skin, flesh that looked as if it had been bleached it was so white. Great flavour in this climate, apparently used to be exported to the Caribbean from here, at great expense, in sailing ship days, for its devotees) and Tomato Purple Calabash (Calabah?) which apparently is a direct descendent of the first tomatoes introduced into Europe by the conquistadors (why I have no idea-the flavour was awful and the texture was watery. How anyone was able to develop this into one of the most popular foods today is almost beyond my understanding)

Hi John. As a result of the constant breakdowns, late opening and early closing times and g.b.a on the Beeb site I only managed to get 6 messages posted in over 2 months, although there were numerous postings I was positively itching to reply to.

Consequently I`ve given up the Beeb site in favour of the happy and accommodating environment and delightful company here (hope dan reads this).  Why not do the same and stay where you are appreciated John?.  In any case, the way things are going most of the Beeb regulars will be over here soon.

Mind you I shall probably be unable to resist the temptation to go over and `help` David occasionally.

With a bit of luck his search engine will never be able to disentangle all that punctuation, so he`ll never get here.

The post I really itched to get onto was by the Famous D.C. but that was when I found out I couldn't re-register. Strawberries are cousins of tomatoes and potatoes???? I could hear botanists hitting the ground in a dead faint.
The other problem I have is that their opening times translate into 4 a.m. until 5 p.m. for me so I will probably do little posting there even if I do ever get accepted back. Thanks for the advice Rosebud, I will try when I come up with a moniker that seems suitable.

I know it's not particularly nice of me  :-[, as he can't defend himself, and I know my knowledge of things botanical is based more on estuarine flora  ;D rather than horticulture  :-/, but I have to say that I stopped reading DCs posts altogether because even once I had deciphered them - they were full of inaccuraces such as the one mentioned above.

A quick glance at the latin names of the strawberry, potato and others will quickly establish what is related to what, but I would take John/Eric/Tim/Hugh and others advice anytime!! :)

Love, Palefire

Hiya Stephan, glad you've come across.   You'll soon get used to this Board, its much more fun - just take a look at "Playing" in "The Shed" to give you an idea of what you can do.

The best things about it are that you you can post 24/7, and we've got a human for a moderator who frequently logs on and joins in.    He was recently asked if we could have a "Recipe" Board - we've now got a "Recipe" Board.

I'm sure you'll enjoy this Board.

yes - lovely to see you - as if we've ever missed you!

But clever as it is, with moving pictures and ghastly teeth,  this site still does not have the 'niceness' of the 'other one'.

And David is younger than you think? An 11 year old son?

And, John, we have all been through this unacceptance thing with the Beeb .

And 'playing'? - is that what this board is really for?

Great input, John. - Tim

i tell you what i'd really like. if you lot that use the bbc board could just stop comparing the 2 for 5 minutes, they are entirely different and its not a competition. if you don't think its nice, or friendly here then why do you bother? personally i thought i was getting on well with all of you but to get up in the morning and read comments like Tim's regarding 'the niceness' of it all really sets me up for the day. cheers.

Hi Legless, I WILL compare the two Boards, so there.    This Board is much better than t'other with much nicer people who talk to each other.

For example, I replied to one query on the OTGF board, and made a suggestion to try to help solve a problem.   I've went back 7 days later to ask for a response, and I ain't got one.   That just wouldn't happen on this Board, would it.

I see this Board as for the Elite, and Auntie's Boards for the Hoy Poloy, (but I will converse with them)!!!!!

As for toys, they are available if you want to use, but it's not mandatory to do so.

Hello Legless,

Tim can (and will, I'm sure), explain his comment when he next logs in...I know that he's cooking for 12 of The Clan today..

I've been pondering, tho, the use of the word "niceness"- and I'm puzzled...

"nice" as in people being friendly & helpful?, or

"nice" as in variety and movement of subject boards??

If the latter......yes, I'll agree..anyone, anywhere in this W.W.World of ours can (at present) type in "blah-di-blah bbc.co.uk and a whole host of MBs open up..if, of course, you live in a time-zone that permits inclusion into the discussion, so much the better!...and that makes the Beeb Gardening Board fresh & stimulating.

but "nice" as being friendly??!! I remember that about 2 wks ago a thread being deleted because it had got so d***ed nasty, and remember last year, Tim? We boycotted posting advice on it for...what? 2 weeks, during the growing season when peeps had all-sorts of probs.?? Because peeps were complaining that we were "too friendly" in welcoming new posters to the Board. "Patronising","Clique-ish "I recall, were words that were bandied about..

And then, of course, famously and epically, was the Poster who posted as (allegedly ;)) her own Solicitor...

"nice" Tim????

Here, we've had an hospitable welcome and people are, well....nice..!!! It's a quiet time of year for those, like me, who grow few winter veggies (tho grow over-wintering ones, ie purple-sprouting, garlic, shallots with just Perpetual Spinach to keep me strength up for the Spring digging), so perhaps I'll be not posting so much on the main Boards, but recollect I said the same last Winter on the Beeb Lotties?...

I've found people here very friendly and "nice" and,  importantly, knowledgeable...when things go wrong (as they will - oh! most certainly they will!!) I'll be asking my Rapid Response questions here...and I'm sure that my new Lottie friends will come up trumps..

Thank you Ozzie for telling us about this Site and thank you, all you existing Allotmenteers for welcoming us. - Lishka

For John Miller:

In case you missed it, John...to  re-apply for membership of the BEEB Boards, I found I needed to open a completely new Account (for me it was 'Yahoo' rather than the Hotmail a/c my various Forum posts were directed to)  to register....

And, with all that hassle, you wonder why I chose a  Registration Name of "Disgusted-Tonbridge Wells' ?????

Regards, Lishka

I too would like to thank Ozzy for pointing the way here and to agree with Lishka to thank all the members for welcoming us with open arms. 8)
I too love this board and all the new found friends and old friends that have come over to join us.
The smileys and other bits make me laugh and if you have had a bad day this is what you need. ;)
As for Tims remark I feel sure he will explain himself when he finds the right words I dont think it was intended to come over that way. :o

Hi legless.  Don`t take any notice of old Tim. Trouble is that at his age they get a bit grumpy and set in their ways, and having the kids around for long upsets them. Don`t worry, he`ll gradually used to things here, and then he`ll be the life and soul of the party
