My aubergine seeds have sprouted. Will they make a worthwhile plant or should I buy one? They are Black Beauty.

If we get a decent summer you might get a harvest, but to be sure I would be inclined to buy in a plant or two. I sowed mine in January and they have not really done well - only about 6 inches tall even though I potted them on a couple of weeks back. They are now in my unheated greenhouse. We need some nice warm days - and nights!

SIX inches? a veritable giant compared with mine.

It's very late, generally if you haven't got fruit set by June you'll get no harvest. I'd hedge my bets and buy a plant or two too.

I finally had the self control to not sow any aubergine seeds this year because I've never had more than two or three small fruit over the last three years. :(
