it is one modem only allow one pc?
« on: July 23, 2009, 15:38:19 »
I've just bought a new laptop because my old desk top was very slow & old(5yrs).
This morning when I try to connect my new pc,I had to unplug the enet lead from my old pc  into this one and I had to ring up to Virgin to ask for to set up this!
Now this one is running!
This that mean my old pc cannot go online any more ???unless I get a router >:(
If I get a router do I had to tell them Virgin  to setup again???
please help how can I run to pc in the some house ???

I would buy a wireless router and have the pc plugged into this and the laptop wireless. Just make sure you tell the salesman i't's for virgin or phone virgin and ask for an upgrade to wireless.
Did they get you to type in an IP address i.e 192.168.1.10 into the new laptop?
What's the model number of the router/modem(have a look at the sticker underneath)?

if you have been with them for a while and no longer tied into a contract you can try ringing them and say that you want to leave because another isp such as tiscali is offering a free wireless router and you want one, they will put you throught to customer retentions and they will send you a free router to keep you as a customer.

A couple of things to try.

Have you tried restarting the modem/ip each time you changed pc/laptop?

Do the following on both the laptop and pc.

click on start then select run
type cmd and press return/enter
A black screen should appear
type ipconfig and press return/enter

We only need:

IP address:
Subnet mask: (usualy 255.255.255.0 )
Gateway IP:

Then post on here what they both say.

Once we know what both of them say, we can change both of them to manual ip and enter the details you give us. Sometimes the pc' are set to auto IP and this can cause problems when switching from one to the other.

you dont need to plug the modem into the router they have a modem built in,you plug the router into the telephone line and then connect wirelessly or you can just use a rj45 cable and use it as a wired router, ive always found the netgear routers very easy to set up.
But make sure that you have a wireless card in the computer or you can get a net gear dongle to make it wireless.

To change anything on the router you must use an ethernet cable (this is a protection against anyone accessing a router wirelessly and making it unusable).

hey if i undertsand your set up correctly, your phone line goes into your modem and that goes into your computer, which port does it go into your computer because if you have two ethernet  adapters free (if your modem uses the one in your pc - easy to add another) all you'll need is a "switch over" cable, its the same as an ethernet cable but wired backwards, this will let you network the 2 computer without the need for a hub or new router, just simple set up a network (computer does it all for you) and it'll work....

But you would have to have the main pc always on when you want to use the laptop, and a crossover cable is the same as a patch except the two middle cables are switched around(i can't remember the colours).
