Moving fruit bushes
« on: July 22, 2009, 07:05:26 »
Sadly, I can no longer pick and/or prepare my black, white and red currants or gooseberries, so I'm going to Freecycle the bushes.

The new 'owner' will have to dig them up.  Can anyone tell me, please, when is the best time for this?

Also to go are some rhubarb crowns - (a late variety, 'Cawood's Delight') - can they go at the same time?

(I'm keeping my strawberries and raspberries - there's never a shortage of volunteer pickers for those!)

Thanks for your help.

All best moved when dormant... after the leaves have gone... usually late October. If the bushes are old tell the new owner to cut back most of the top growth.. or there may be too much for the damaged roots to support. If they are sensible they can strike cuttings from the prunings and get 10-20 more free plants the year after!!  :)

Thanks very much, Saddad - late October it is. And I'll leave the cutting back to the digger-uppers, then they can use the prunings if they want.

Thanks again.
