Did anyone see the weather with a gulf stream map?
« on: July 15, 2009, 21:35:12 »
Just a couple of days ago the weather girl showed a map of Britian with the gulf stream and where it is in relation to our country. It goes around the north of Scotland.

But on her newly reviewed map it was shown to be going through the channel in the south.

I hope someone else saw it as Im beginning to think I dreamt it, but only after telling so many people.....who had heard nothing like that.

Or am I just going / gone mad???

I was born with nothing and have most of it left.

You're not going mad star!  All this week they've been explaining on the BBC that at this time of year the Gulf Stream would normally be north of us (which gives us summer weather) but at the moment it's south of us which is why we're getting this weird unseasonal weather.

My son flew to Belgium today and his flight was delayed by 5 hours- don't know if it was the weather but seems likely.

Do you mean the Gulf Stream or the Jet Stream.

The Jet Streams circles the Earth. There are two of them, one in the northern hemisphere and one in the south. The northern travels clockwise, the southern, anti. - its all to do with the planet rotation, like water down plug holes.

The northern jet stream ends over western Europe, its latitude varying on climatic conditions and it carries a great deal of water.

If its latitude is north of Scotland, then we get dry sunny weather - Happy days.
If its latitude is over the UK, then we get depressions across many parts of the country (rain) - Not so happy days.

Barnowl there are various Gulfstream excutive jets such as this one

They are often called flying Rolls-Royces as they're all powered by R-R engines.

The jet stream shifts about a lot. If it's to the south of us we gat cold weather like last summer, if it's to the north we get warmer weather, and if it goes straight over us we get wet weather. So it's worth watching.

I saw the weather forcast which showed  the jet stream.  I also saw a program about the 2 jet streams.   They travel half way between the poles and the equater, snaking across from west to east.  They occur from hot air from the equater meeting cold from the poles..  As said before they effect our weather.  The program also explained why it is quicker to fly from America to England than visa versa.  The planes try to get into the jet stream flying west and try to avoid it the opposite way.   I was reminded of the joke the Beatles made on American tv about flying to Greenland and taking a left turn to find America.
You can see the jet streams on a map with metcheck weather.  It is in the left hand list.
