Where to store stuff?
« on: July 12, 2009, 19:10:56 »
I'm in my first year on the plot and it has just dawned on me... in the next few weeks I'm going to have quite a bit of produce to store... only I've nowhere cool and dark to put it! The shed on my plot gets too hot (south facing windows all down one side) and I've only got a greenhouse at home... no pantry or anything like that either. What does everyone else do?

Think I might have to get one of those small outdoor store things for the bottom of the garden because there's nowhere in my house I'd call cool... apart from in winter - then it's bl**dy freezing!

I've only got a tiny freezer so had already concluded I need to get another.

We have a stupidly large basement bathroom, it's never warm in there it's like a cave and because of its size isn't particularly humid. Failing that I keep my bedroom cool all year, I do not heat it, so that's my next port of call.

We got a freezer via freecycle for nothing last year - it works a treat!

I hang the garlic and onions in the car port.

For the last few years I have been storing my pumpkins, vegetable spaghetti, etc on shelves in the conservatory - they have kept in good condition until end of April following year (that's when we ate the last one). Seems as long as its dry, with good air circulation and frost free, they are happy.

LOL @ getting a freezer for Christmas. I have to say I wouldn't mind that either... though I'd prefer it if the freezer was bought not for Christmas and I got a 'proper' present.

Wish I had a basement. I could use the attic I suppose but I don't fancy risking life and limb every time I need an onion!

Freecycle - I didn't think of that! Mind, I haven't got a car or OH so getting it might be a problem. My brother has a van but he's not the most reliable person in the world!

I was thinking about using the attic for storing, but wondered if it would get too hot up there

I spent the summer of 1976 living in an attic bedroom. the heat up there was a bit exessive at times, with the sun falling on black slate, and no insulation to speak of!

Same here Robert, it can get soooo hot (wasn't in 76 tho  ;) ).
But we do have proper insulation so it might be ok

I learnt the same lesson the hard way too.  I have a shed for storage but most greens do not store well unless frozen.   If you sow in succession, little and often every 2-3 weeks throughout the season,  this will resolve most of your problems from next year.  It will also give you more fresh veg over a longer period
All you do and all you see is all your life will ever be

We have sown our cauli and brocolli in succesion this year but have still had to freeze some. I does make it easier not having such a glut at the same time

I was thinking more about pumpkins, garlic and shallots for storing but agree succession sowing would be good for other vegies

Our Attic gets roasting hot and it is insulated. I used to dry flowers up there and some days you couldn't breathe. We store our squash in the spare bedroom but garlic and shallots in the shed
