"Soiless Mixtures" in Pots
« on: July 11, 2009, 22:42:00 »
I just read something which I'm questioning. It said "Always use soiless mixtures in pots because soil will compact with each watering."  Is that what you folks do? I tend to mix up soil and whatever is handy for organic matter plus some water retaining crystals.

I like the old JI composts, and don't have any problems with them.

If it grows it is good.

I suppose that every one has a different definition of 'soil' but I call everything which makes up a growing medium   soil.

May be I just interpret things differently to normal people

I would think PurpleHeather is right but I always think of soil as the soil I get from my allotment and that is heavy clay so I wouldn't use it in pots as it does compact down.
